H with a crack!

I'm looking at buying a '45 H which is in good shape and runs well. However, there is a crack in the clutch housing starting by the serial number tag and continues to the opening for the clutch shaft. I won't use this as a loader tractor, just for cycle mowing. Will this be a problem? Should it be fixed or replaced? Thanks in advance.

I have one of those castings that you can have at no cost if you are anywhere near northwest Iowa. I don't have any need for the thing but hate to see it go for scrap.

Del,

Whichever way you go, get after it.

If you've ever seen one laying on the ground, you won't hesitate.

I would replace it. Shouldn't be any problem finding a good one, but the tractor will have to be split to change it out.

Here is my two cents for what it is worth. I have heard that drilling a small reliefe hole at the end of a crack in cast will help relieve the stress that is causing the crack and help stop it from going further. I would try this and then. If you can weld, buy a few sticks of specialty rod made for cast. I am not a good welder but there are rods {for a price} that even make me look good. A good welder can get buy with the cheap stuff. Not Me. Better yet hire someone. grind off excess weld and paint her up.

A good welder can heal that crack up for you and after grinding you shouldn't even know it was there. I have done a great deal of this over the years and with the right rod and the right technique she'll be a strong as new.

The fact that the crack stopped at the clutch shaft is proof of the hole in the end of the crack stopping the progress, being true. I welded a football size chunk back into a Ford 4000 tranny where the single arm loader mounts. (a friends son was rototilling and failed to make the headland turn at 15 mph. the bucket hit a concrete feed bunker in the tall stuff and the arm snatched a big wad of cast with it.

I deep "V"ed the joint and used nickel rod with DCRP to fill the "V". after grinding and painting it was invisible. The loader was bolted back on and is still working!

To look at one that is broken, check out the picture in the thread (might be page two or three by now on splitting an H.
