I have a question about my 460 IH diesel tractor. Whenever I am pulling or pushing a load, it is almost impossible to get the thing out of gear to change direction. If the drivtrain is not under load it shifts fine. Does anyone know why it does this?

I think you are both right in that I don't have the TA properly adjusted. As Mr McKay probably recalls, A few months ago I was on here asking questions about replacing the TA. I pulled a stupid and and overreved the TA comming down a hill and had to replace the TA clutch/pressure plate and flywheel. Now I have to fine tune the install. Thank you both for your knowledgeable information. Gary in Mozarks

Pull the TA lever back and see if that helps make it easier to shift. If it does, then for sure as Hugh suggests get that linkage adjusted ASAP. From what you describe it sounds like this is your problem but I have had shifting problems from other causes.

If pulling the TA does not help one thing that I have personally noted on the 560s that I’ve had is that the original clutch with a full fiber face had been replaced with a metallic button style clutch. These button clutches were at one time sold as a dynalife clutch and were supposed to outlast the original clutch disks under severe use. They did, but unfortunately at the cost of the flywheel and pressure plate. The button clutch has a nasty habit of wearing the flywheel and pressure plate causing a curved edge to develop on the inside and outside radii of the buttons on the disk. This wear pattern causes “drag” even when the clutch is released which can cause hard shifting.

Gary: Sounds like your clutch and TA are out of adjustment. Description without diagrams is quite difficult. You best get a manual and adjust. Failure to do this will be costly. Close does not count with these, they must be adjusted by the book and exactly to the described specs.
