I need to replace pistons and am confused by the number of alternatives listed in the parts manual. The Head is a 8776 and the pistons that are in the tractor now are aluminum step faced. The kits available through this site have this type piston overhaul kit with and without sleeve seals. I can't find a sleeve seal in the parts manual-where does it fit? Also need advice on how to determine what size rod bearings I need. I have no idea if the crankshaft has been worked on since 1943. Do I have to remove the crank and take it to a machinist for correct measurement? Beginning to think I might better leave it alone while it still runs.

The H has pressed in sleeves, no sealing ring required. They are used on the A, B. C & Super C
because they have what is called wet sleeves and the sealing rings are use to seal the sleeves at the bottom of the block.

You need to take that crankshaft to a reputable
auto machine shop and have it measured. They can determine if it just needs polishing or needs to be ground undersize. They can also supply your
rod and main bearings that's needed. Hal

An H does not run sealing rings. There basicaly should be a overbore kit 3 and 7/16 with or with out high domes and there will be a kit for the serial #s above 390,0000 That does not concern you either. If you take a bearing shell off one of the rods they are usally stamped on the back what they are if they are 10,20 thousands under. That way you may be able to tell if its been turned already . But you will still need to do what Janicholson says to figure out if its egg shaped or not.and find a good machinist. JON

If it runs, what are the symptoms that make it need repair.

Measurement is the key to good repair. Measurement can be simple and very effective using Plastigage, and feeler gages for the majority of components. If the pan is taken off the rods and (I think) front two main bearings can be plastigaged. Follow the directions. With the head off the pistons can be checked for fit with strip feeler gages. Older (pre 1970) auto repair manuals/texts are helpful in diagnosis, and measurement.

If it runs, does not knock or sound strange, and if it doesn't smoke grey/blue using oil smoke I'd leave it alone.
My two cents, JimN

No dicernable knocking or noise, plenty of bluish smoke, plugs foul quickly and oil blowing out #1 plug. Pistons on TDC can be wiggled around slightly (probably 1/32" play) with fingertip pressure.

I'd pop out the tighest fitting piston, after checking gap between it and sleeve.Might want to use ridge reamer prior to pulling them. Then remove rings and check for end gap when in the sleeve w/o the piston. If that one is out of tolerance replace all the rings. pISTONS TOO IF OUT OF TOLERANCE.
