How big can you go on a B engine, safely? What mods can you do to get more power? Wanting to restore and set up dads B for him as a gift and to get him started in pulling. A gift for him for Christmas to start next pulling season.

I can relate to both the drifting apart and wanting to pull a B.The drifting apart was do to me being me. Anyway on the pulling part.I am learning that my B won"t fit in a couple of classes because of the 140 head I put on it.But if you can get a set of 3 1/8 pistons with a decent dome and a C-153 cam and a head off a super A or C along with the manifold and carb it should be in the upper 20"s if not in the 30 HP range. Some say you can cut down a set of 3 1/4 sleeves to fit in the B block.

Only if a 1/32" sleeve wall is acceptable to you. I sure wouldn't try it, but have opened up the lower bore in the block to accept the larger 3-7/16" sleeve OD.

I read where a guy stroked one to 5 1/4 with a 3 3/4 bore which comes out to just under 232cid.
I just wanted to add 1in stroke to mine and I was told it would be around $3000.

What does 'safely' mean to you? Some pullers I know would be happy with 'survive the pulling season' (or at least this next class!) and no problem with mods to the block/head that are permanent (such as a 3-3/4" bore!!).

1- What rules does your local club have for antiques?

The Cheapest/easiest mods will be to bolt on head and manifold from the later series of tractors (ie x30/x40, the manifold will not let your aircleaner line up and the C135/153 have bigger carbs but the mounting studs have wider spacing and again the aircleaners aren't going to work). But like Shaggy mentioned, the use of a later model head or manifold might DQ you from pulling with your club.

You can usually get close to the same upgrades with custom work at a machine shop on your original head, but price goes up accordingly. ON the cranks, where there's a will there's a way. In my experience you can go somewhere around 1/3" to 1/2" before the inside of the block needs work for clearance.

2- What is your expected use? If the expected use is pulling only, then fine; but if some real use is expected(bush-hoging, driveway scraping, etc.), I would shy away from some of the more extreme mods that would hurt long term durability or require racing gas to run (such as stroker cranks, epoxied sleeves, some of the valve seat and rocker arm mods or 12 to 1 compression ratios).

In my experience the guys that win the most have gone to the extremes, but the tractor is stripped of hydraulics & PTO so they don't plan to use it for anything but pulling (of course the B hasn't got hydraulics anyhow, so that may not be an issue). Probably want to just target the 2500-3000lb classes. It would be hard for the 24" tires to keep up with the 36 and 38" tires.

Hey Stan.
I have a Super A that has a set of 3 1/4"s in it and the head and manifold and carb are the stock ones and with the rebuild and the valve job it made 25hp on a dyno this summer with 87 octane gas. I also pulled twice this summer and had a blast!! Got spanked by a bone stock C! Oh the 25 hp is sucking thru the stock oil bath air cleaner too. $800 tops in the engine.

Shaggy,
That combo sounds just like my Super C. You must have a late Super A (after the split in mid '51 310xxx?) when they started using the 354898 block. And yeah, it's hard for the 24" tire to compete with a 36" unless you go out to at least a 12.4 or 13.6 to match his footprint, but those would look a little off on an A. :)

The tractor is just sitting there behind the barn. I use to drive it when I was a kid. Dad wants to get into pulling like I am. So I thought it would be a good gift to him to restore the ole B and give it more power so he could pull. Plus it would be something differnt, kinda like a challenge to do. Instead of building those big molines. Besides I'll trade him out of it, he'll think its mine and then when it is done I will give it to him
It is kinda a bonding thing, since we have drifted apart do to other reasons
