If I could attach a slide hammer to a bolt screwed into the splined shaft would it be possible to bring out the backing plate with the shaft or is there a snap ring somewhere in the way? Pry bars are out of the question on these backing plates. They will not budge.
Thanks, Buddy

Buddy I did not think of threaded holes so first look for that in the plate, and no there is no snap ring so the shaft should pull the plate.

I haven't worked on the brakes on an MTA, so this may not apply. But if they're like the 100 series disk brakes, there should be two threaded holes in the backing plates to screw bolts into. Running the bolts in will remove the backing plate. Only thing holding plate on the hundred series tractors is a large o-ring, but they are sometimes hard to remove, as the o-ring has hardened. Behind the plate is bolts that hold the bull pinion housing to trans. To get to these bolts, backing plate must be removed.

Pull the PTo remove the bolt out of the end of the axel remove the axel then it will come out , the inside bearing is in a cage and the bull gear will not let the pinion come out and if ya force it it will break . If you are tryen to turn the bull gears around ya will have to pull the axels anyhow and the deck . Not sure why ya want to do that but that is up to you to much work just to say that i did it.

Warming the casting with a propane torch till it is hot enough that you can't touch it, but not so hot as to boil oil, (keep the flame moving, and don't heat the backing plate). This expands the casting, and helps in the right direction.
