The biggest thing I found out while pullin' is it's more in the "bite" than in the ponies. If she's running good, spend $$ on getting the right type and widest allowed tires, get your hitch set exactly right, give her just a few more "R"s and you'll have a blast and likely will pull with the top guys. After that gets you hooked, then spend the bigger bucks on the engine. Have fun tho . . .that's the first rule!

Buy a 450 engine kit, pull out the dry sleeves out of the M block, run the pistons on the block, use a 450 head gasket and go pulling, good cheap way to pick up 10 hp. You could do that as an inframe overhaul, and the price of an inframe overhaul. Now, you could spend a little more and bore the M block to fit the 450 sleeves and have the block renewable upon rebuilding years down the road,, But you said cheap,,, so thats what I would do. Add a 450 cam to it, and you would have a 450 engine in the M,, for less that 500 bucks. that could make anywhere from 63-70 hp if you do it right. ChadS

I've helped mechanic on a 600 HP Mini-Rod for the last five years...and if I have learned one thing about pulling (if you want to be competitive) CUBIC DOLLARS BABY, NOT CUBIC INCHES! Pulling is the most expensive way to travel 300 feet. Sorry! Start with the inexpensinve stuff if you want (governor work, ignition performence, fuel systems), but sooner or later it's gonna boil down to a 450 cam, a good set of valve springs, a set of Firecraters, and some head work! Keep your chin up!

I was told to put light tension springs out of a recurve kit for a chevy and that would help it advance quicker.

Get more compression, firecrater pistons, take a little off head, make sure its a 8060 or newer, 450 cam, 450 or lp intake and exhaust manifolds, electronic ignition , rejet carb and adjust carb and motor to specs I use 386 autolite plugs, that ought to give you a start.

But that's not cheap to do, unless you steal the parts.
