Hello,

I own a farmall a crank start that I'm having problems with starting. This is not a problem at the initial startup. if the tractor sits a day or a reasonable amount of time.(MANY HOURS)its starts like its brand new. Let me explain.

1. I.ll give it 1 revolution with the choke completely closed. The next 1/2 revolution it fires and runs like a bear. this happens 905 of the time sometimes I need to give it another 1/2 revolution.

2. I can run it and use it all day but if I shut it down for any reason,I can crank all day and it will not start up again PERIOD. This would include choke completely closed, half closed, wide open, different throttle settings on the handle.Ether in the air intake, fresh gas.etc

3. At this point I have checked for maybe a weak spark or some problem electrically. I have a great blue spark that will jump to contact about 3/8 inch. Its a mag and not a distributor.

4.What I'm asking for is any information from anyone who may have had a similar problem. You can use my e mail address if that would be better for you or I will be checking this forum daily

Had a similar problem with my first car. It lacked compression . Run a compression check.

How soon after it quits do you check for fire? Need to do that right away before the engine cools. I guess it will start the next day
after sitting all night. Adjust those valves to
.017" cold and see if it will restart when hot.
I was thinking a weak condenser or coil, but a blue spark sounds good. Hal

Have you checked the compression? I have a 1940 H with the same symptoms, although it is electric start. I am quite sure the problem has to do with the valves. I know mine are adjusted properly, but I think it is time to pull the head and do a complete valve job

I have a 39 A that done the same thing, First adjust the valves to the proper setting HOT .014 like they tell you from IH, Thats when you are having your peoblem!!! If you dont have secuess with this at least your valves are set, Second take your mag off and let someone go threw it, The inpause coupler could use cleaning and if you still have an oem coil replace it!!!! Evin if it has good spark its still breaking down when it gets hot after 65 years!!and third points and condencer, Hope this helps CLIFF S
