There are two serial numbers in the service manual--not sure if there is a difference.i'm trying to fit on a 1940 M. Since I am at it--is there a difference between a starter drive and a bendix? There was a grinding sound when I would try and start, then the starter would eventually catch. Tried cranking flywheel around with handcrank, but still same problem. Now it doesn't grind at all -- I can hear the starter spinning, but not engaging. any ideas?

Starter drive is the correct term, Bendix is a brand name. When refferring to the starter drive, it should be called a starter drive, not a bendix.

My manual only list's the 1107448 starter for the M. Your Bendix spring may be broken since it won't engage the ring gear. Hal
PS: I would pull the starter and hook up your battery to the starter and short across the small
solenoid terminals with a screwdriver and see if the bendix flies forward when you do this. Be careful, keep hands away that end of starter.
