My F20 will run smooth under load like the plow or going up steep hill. When parked or under light load I have to retard mag to get F20 to run smoothly.Untill tractor gets good and warmed up she stumbles ,backfires ,and blows black smoke on fast acceleration. Ive been frustrated with this for a long time. I would apreciate lots of good ideas. Thanks,Jeff.

just my thoughts and not from actual f20 experience. It may be too rich under light load with throttle plate closed, high vacuum, the carb is dumping too much gas. The carbs are simple and just may not be too good at getting the fuel right under all conditions. But it can probably be improved if studied carefully and tweaked carefully internally. There are folks who know how carbs work who may be able to help. Before you blame it all on the carb the condition of the engine must be carefully evaluated. If you expect it to run good the whole motor must be in top shape. Good valve train, good compression, good ignition, no vacuum leaks, proper exhaust, etc..

That is a real common problem with F20s. I might be wrong but I blame it on the magneto design. It is my theory that as the distibutor disk gets a groove worn in it the spark gets to jumping around. Anybody else have any better ideas?

Try using "Autolight 3077" deep reach spark plugs,we switchd to these and it made a big diff. Just my 2 cents

You may want to try changing the condenser. The condenser will sometimes do strange things especially with temperature changes. Just a thought. People tend to over look that item.
