Just bought a nice 400. Starts easy, runs great. But, driving onto a trailer once the front wheels were about 2 ft. up, it coughed and died and wouldn't restart. Rolled it off and it started right up. Tried again and it died. Checked spark while inclined, okay. Plenty of fuel in the float bowl. Plenty of gas in the tank. Rebuilt the carb just in case. Still dies once you hit a certain angle.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Matt I know you said plenty of gas in tank. But just in case if you have the optional 21 gallon gas tank the fuel stops flowing when front of tractor is higher pretty easy.If you have the tank
the fuel bowl will look like its lower or near same height as carb.

It is the 21 gal. tank. I checked the gas level on the incline after it died and it looked high enough but it may have been close. But, would the engine stop that quickly with gas still in the float bowl?

Thanks

Yes it would seem that enough fuel should be in carb bowl to run onto trailer. But thought I would mention it because a 450 with same tank that I used a lot would act the about the same if I didn't keep enough gas in it.Could roll it back to level start it up and drive home as long as not much uphill involved.

The more I think about it, the more convinced I am that this is the problem becasue of the way the tank sits and the level needed in the carb to run. I'll find out Mon. Of course, if it is that simple I'll be both relieved and feeling a little sheepish.

Thanks

Did you try choking the engine when on the incline? Sounds like it may not be getting gas when the front is elevated. Hal

Good suggestion. I'll try it and post the result. I also like Alan's theory that something electrical is rolling around causing a short.

Thanks

It could be anything. My late father-in -law had a Ford with the flat head and he complained
about a noise from the engine. He wanted me to listen to it and I thought it was a loose rod. I told him to drive by the Ford garage and let them listen. They said it was a worn timing gear. I pulled the radiator and timing gear cover and replaced the gear. It didn't look worn, but that cured the noise. Hal

Matt,

Pull that bakelite cap off the starter solenoid and see if that little contact washer return-spring is where it should be and in one piece.

I had one, one time do that and the spring was rolling around in there shorting out the "hot start" ignition circuit to the field and thereby shutting her down every time it hit an incline.

Run like a million bucks on the level.

I checked spark at the distributor while it was on an incline. It was okay. But, I'm going to check the starter solenoid return spring as you suggest. Sounds like the same symptoms.

Thanks.

might be a stupid question...but would it die if the back wheels went up the incline (back up)..don't know for sure sounds like needle valve/float problems...?????dats my guess...

That question is on my mind also. I'll try it next week. Replaced the gaskets, float and needle valve during the carb rebuild. That stopped the drip leak. Also reset the float level. I just can't figure out why the wrong float level would cause it to die so quickly.

All theories welcome. Thanks.
