What would be an average number of hours on a 1974 674 diesel engine before it might need rebuilding? What would be an average price for said tractor in good condition, good rubber, front end loader, with 5000 hours? Will appreciate any info. Thanks. Huey

Hi Huey, my brother has a 684 same D239 Diesel engine as 674 with 5600 hrs, still running great. He also has 454 with D179 that has over 15000 hrs and still running.
More worried about parking brake being chewed up into transmission/hydraulic fluid, clogging up the hydraulic system.
Test parking brake for braking ability.

Does it have T/A?

My 2 cents

JB2, Thanks for the reply. I looked at and drove the tractor this morning. It seems to me to be in very good condition. Has a Freeman loader with a heavy dirt bucket and a manure scope. It has no TA, 8 forward and 4 reverse, real good tires and sheet metal is good, approx. 5000 hrs. He is asking $8500,is this an average price? Thanks. Huey

Hi Huey, there was a 684 advertised at the local CIH dealer for $9500 CND, 2 wheel drive no loader. The 684 is one model newer but same tractor. So $8500 with loader sounds good but I don't know the market in your area.
Prices vary from place to place depending on demand. Some places there is no demand for a tractor in the 60HP range, it is to big for hobby farmer and to small for a large farm.

JB2, Thanks again for the reply. I thought that it was a pretty fair price, but wanted some other opinions. If anybody else out there has some info on prices, please post. If I can make room in my building, guess I better buy it. It's like you said in your last reply, JB, it is a little bigger than I wanted, and the seller wanted a bigger tractor. Huey
