Yeah, like Paul said. Early bell housing had no starter hole. Also, early flywheels had no ring gear groove and early fan hubs had no generator pulley.

mhb, The early model "A" did indeed come without a starter. In fact the early models did not even have a place in the torque tube to mount a starter as an option. Later the torque tube was configured to accept a starter as factory equipped or as a dealer option. If no starter was present, a plate was placed over the hole where the starter would be mounted. The conversion option included the starter and the ring gear. Many times the starter option would also require adding the generator and a battery, with one exception, that being if the tractor was already equipped with the Delco light system which ran the lights through the battery rather than directly from the generator as the Bosch system had, then the generator was already there. Lights, as well as starters were both optional equipment and could be purchased together, as separate systems, or not at all.

Parts book shows torque tube without place for starter for SN 501 to 54386 this would be 1939, 1940 and early 1941. Starter was optional for some time after that parts book shows plate to cover starter opening. Like about everthing about old IH there is some question about when starter was first available as parts book shows starter motor push rod for SN 501 to 42756 and starter motor does not show begining serial No. The Farmall Letter Series Tractor Book says first starter was on FAA 18322 built March 25 1940.

The electric starter was an optional extra cost item on all of the Farmalls. The starter did not become standard equipment until sometime in the mid forties? Not sure on the date.
