I don't know that much about CUBs, what are some of the "week links" I should look for? So far the only thing the owner can tell me is the tractor is red with a belly mower and has not run in six years. Where do I look to spot a freez crack on a CUB block? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks for your time. Glen

Glen,

As others said, you pretty much need to look over all casting areas. At the lower radiator "tank" (right below the grill), look for a welded-up crack. I have several Cubs that have repairs here--the top surface near the center of the casting seems to be the thin area that's first to crack--even before the block cracks. Blocks tend to crack around the mounting bolts--both front and rear mounts, expecially for Cubs that have been "dogged" or run hard over rough terrain. We have a Cub torque tube that has welds right inside of the final drive mating surface.

Freezing is not the only way a Cub block cracks. The engine is the frame, and the Cub is a little underbuilt in this arena. So, if someone did a little four-wheeling with it, the block could be cracked practially anywhere.

Look behind the carb area for cracks. Also look in the steering area for cracks. Neat little tractors but way under powered. Good lawn tractor and small arces tractor. But a lot of fun to play with. Did a restore/paint last summer on one.
