Bought a cub which runs very good, but, when it is started it revs at a very high rpm and the idle adjustment screw on the carb can not be let out or turned down any farther than it already is. When the machine is off the entire throtle linkage works fine. But when it is running the govenor arm moves but the arm that is suppose to move after that does not. Is there any adjustment on the govenor to correct this??? Or should I be looking for something else?? jim

Jim, there is a rockshaft that crosses in front of the block. It connects to the governor on one side and has a rod running back to the carb on that side. Generally, a lot of slop develops in the ends of this shift and the connecting arms. You can use shim material, loctite, or JB Weld to take the slop out of it. If you do not detect a lot of play in this shaft you may have some broken springs in the governor. 9 times out of 10 it is the slop and wear in this shaft.

I vouch for the slop thing. I just fixed my brother's Cub. Pulled the rock shaft out, loaded the end with JB Weld, put it back in, then put JB Weld around the outside where the shaft was inserted into the governor. 24 hours later I fired her up and no more problems. Of course, make sure you adjust the governor linkage on the carburator end after doing this because someone has most likely messed that up before you when they tried to account for the governor slop.

I'll 'third' the motion, on the slop. I opted to get bushings put in to cure the freeplay on the rockshaft. Couple more bucks than using JB Weld.

But when you say this:... "But when it is running the govenor arm moves but the arm that is suppose to move after that does not",... it puts me to mind of what else I found on mine- the internal spring-arm has a hole for one end of the main governor spring. Mine had worn to a quarter-inch SLOT, so I was pushing the throttle almost a half before anything moved, before the mechanism showed any response at the rockshaft.

And yes, after the repairs, I had to adjust the yoke on the arm that goes to the carb throttle plate. Like Brent's situation, someone had surely tried to take-up the slop there.

But now, all the mixture/idle speed adjustments work like they should , and I have response from the engine on the first notch of the throttle.
