After a year and a half, finally getting back in gear to get through restoring the 59 Cub. Got the chassis painted about a month ago, major other parts last week. Putting her back together, I noticed a previous possesser removed the steel spaghetti-like filter material from the air filter housing. Is their a source for replacement? I was thinking about stuffing some course steel wool in there. Thoughts? Help? Thanks.

Yeah, I'd go with the scrubber-type material, if you can find it. It might be easier to just find a another whole cleaner.

I think even coarse steel wool might be a little tight for good breathing. A better material would be the thicker stuff like those kitchen metal scouring pads or pot-scrubbers I think they are called. I think that mesh partially sits in the oil. When I cleaned mine it was pretty oily.
