Hey Jon,

The rebuild went pretty well for my first time It think. As you may recall, like you, I put on a SA head and cam. I also put in a SA flywheel and clutch that will,I hope, better handle the greater HP and torque. Just for kicks I ported and polished the head. I had to get another crankshaft, mine had already been turned as far as it would go for standard bearings. I had the "new" shaft turned, put in all new rod, main and cam bearings. Also put in the high profile overbore, pistons.

The one thing that I was glad I did was rebuild the oil pump. Put in new NOS gears all around, flattened the cover, new relief valve and spring. I have between 68 and 70 psi regardless of temp or speed. I did have a little scar relative to oil pressure. I bought all new OEM gauges correct for my year tractor. They were pretty, but the oil gauge didn't work! Of course I was going nuts when I couldn't get oil pressure. In one of my rare "smart" moments I put the old guage on instead of tearing the whole rebuild down (which I almost did - I mean you just expect new from the box to work).

The only thing I didn't get right was the rear seal - I have a small leak when she is running. I think I'm going to live with it for a while before I split her and replace it. I wonder if there is some trick to ensure these dont leak?

Boy, she is monster now! Not the same tractor. I just finshed putting on new fenders and finally got the pulley refurbished and installed. With exception of lights and a new seat, she looks like she just cam off the showroom floor. I'll get pics to you soon.

Keep me posted on your project, I want to hear all about it.

HMMM I wonder why I thought you did an H also.
So far I have her running and have close to 60 pounds of oil pressure at idle. I dont have any fluid in her yet so I have only run her for a few mins. I Had the crank turned to 20 thousands, it was already 10 under. 3 and 7/16 M&W or Fire crator type pistons. The head has been shaved about 60 thousands I had the H high compression Head to start with. I went with the 300 cam shaft and so far I have my super M Carb on her. I rebuilt the Mag that I got for it. and went with the metalic clutch. This is my first complete rebuild also I have done a couple in frames before but never had a crank out before. The hardest part was cleaning every part for reasemble. I watched the vidio about 10 times. I will probly have some problems before her first pull I am sure but you got to work the bugs out I am sure. I also polished the intake ports on my head and made them a touch bigger with a brake cylinder hone along with as much of the intake as I could reach. I also bought a 300 c169 intake. So thats as far as I have gotten I need a 3 to 4 level lower back fusion right now so I have been working real slow. Just trying to get her running before I go for it. I have also stopped rebuilding untill spring and I am recovered.

Do you have any more trips planned in the future? JON

Wow Jon, I sure hope you get back on your feet soon after the operation. Be a shame to have that big red monster sitting out there and not be tearing up the pulling events with her. I don't know if you will be able to tell for sure, but how much extra oomph do you think the bigger manifold and carb gets you? I thought about adding a SH carb and manifold, but right now except for the gas manifold the old girl look original (although some might argue that the after market Delco distributor is a detractor).

Yes I have trips planned this yoer to the Dry Tortugas (reef fish work), Costa Rica (more coral reef work), and Indonesia (mangrove and air-breathing fish work).

Keep me posted on how things are going for you.

Well that big carb looks a little out of place. The manifold is pretty close to the same except for made for the bigger carb the SH had them so I guess thats what I kind of have is a stock SH with a little more head work. I also reworked the Gov myself just to make sure everything was tight and all the holes were round and not oblong but I have reved her up to about 900 rpms so far and that about it. Becuase of not having any water in her yet. I am going to have to post on the pulling board to see what the best way to break this beast in would be. Let me know when you will be leaving for your trips. It seemed like you were gone a long time the last time. Do I owe you anything for that Mag or Shipping? JON

We're good on the mag. I'm glad to see it go to someone who could use it instead of sitting around collecting dust im my garage. I probably told you that I replaced it with one of the aftermarket Delco units - you know, the one turned up 90 degrees so the plug wires are under the hood.

The guy I bought it from said that it came off a tractor that siezed not long after the distributor went on. I believe it, it didn't look like it had any wear.

You probably know more about them than I do, but they do have some interesting features. There is a little plate that can be removed that provides easy access to grease the gears. And a screw on the top of the main body. I thought that this was like the IH distributors such that you would, from time to time, replace the screw with a grease zerk and squeeze a little new grease into it, but I could not get the screw out. So when I had everything torn down I used a little heat and broke the screw free and found the body filled with oil. I don't have a clue why as there are no seals or rotating parts. I cleaned her out and re-filled it with Hy-Tran.

Hi Scotty,

You've made a lot more progress on your SA than I have on mine. Now that the H is done she's the next one in line. How much progress I make and how fast will depend on how good of a mood my lovely bride is in. I will try to post the H pics (when I get them) on the forum, but I'm pretty sure that I still have your e-mail and I'll drop them to you there as well.
