I was needing to talk to someone who has replaced both the driveline seal and the PTO seal on a 1940 H. I need to know if you can do it with out splitting the tractor and if so, how.

Both are simple as others have described, however, park the tractor facing downhill so the rear end oil doesn't leak out when you pull the PTO seal. I parked the H on the gangway(barnhill) facing down to do mine....Mike in Exeter Ontario

Yes, it can be done. First drain front and rear of the case. Next drop the lift-all unit. This will give room to get to the drive shaft. Next tie the clutch pedal down to keep clutch engaged. Next remove the four tapered bolts holding the drive shaft to the transmission driving shaft bearing cage. Slide the drive shaft toward the clutch as far as possible. Next remove the transmission drive shaft coupler. (This can be hard to do, but easier while attached to the tractor.) I use a gear puller and a washer that keeps the puller from messing the female thread up. Next remove the three 3/8 inch bolts holding the seal and pull.
I would replace the countershaft seal at the same time. (Where the lift-all conected.)
If necessary the whole drive assembly will drop out with some juggling. This will require the gaskets be replaced however or new ones made.
The PTO can be done without pulling the shaft. Just two cap screws and the seal cage comes off, unless it is one of the really old one's.
Good luck,
Loyd

For the drive ahaft seal you don't have to split the tractor. The bottom shaft is really easy to get to, the top shaft you may have to drop the hydraulic unit to get the clutch shaft out of the way. I replaced the top shaft seal on mine when I had the Liftall out for some other work, so I'm not sure about that.

The pto seal is easy, just pull off the pto cover. I never did have the driveline apart, so you'll need to get info from someone else

I have replaced only the pto dust seal. No need to split the tractor for that one. simply drain the fluid, though many people claim they park the front wheels in a ditch at like 15 degrees.
