My B has a leak at both pto, rear and the right angle that drives the pulley for the mower. I have read the past pto questions and assume that I can pull the seals from the outside, then lube the new ones and press or tap the new ones in. The seals I got from IH-Case dealer are #7171901 at $17.00 each. I read that one will do and I hope to get by with one as 3 stacked up would lead to $34-$51.The dealer had these in stock, but rolled his eyes when I told him it was for a B. Am I correct on my assumptions and are these the correct seals, both are the same? My idea is to drill 2 holes and put a sheet metal screw in to pull it out. If this doesn't work, a chisel? Thanks for any ideas and info.

If is the factory seal I doubt the screws will work. I barely got mine out with a hammer and chisel with the shaft removed. The easy way is to pull the PTO and take it apart. You need a three jaw puller to get the gear off. The shaft will come out and you can take the inside bearing out put the shaft in backwards and drive the bearing and seal out the back. Worked well for me.

As noted these seals can be a problem. Try this first. The original seals were thicker than today and they may have been replaced with thinner ones, if so they can be driven back enough to accommodate a new seal, only takes a quarter inch, and leave the old seal in there. As I remember a piece of 2 inch pipe does the job. Worth a try.

When I read Dave BN's response I relived the PTO repair on my Super A :-( Getting the old seal out, even with the shaft removed, wasn't an easy job. Sheet metal screws just didn't do it.
Mine has no belt pulley, so I cannot comment on that. However, in general, you can place the seal a bit more inward so that the lip of the seal does not ride on the worn spot on the shaft or bushing. Especially the new PTO shaft seal is a lot thinner than the original one and hence can be shifted as you please.

William, if your rear PTO seal is anything like mine was your in for a real struggle. I ended up taking the whole thing apart, removing the big drive gear on the inside and driving the shaft out rearwords. I then tried a variety of pullers both homemade and store bought. I could tear the seal apart but not remove it. I ended up CAREFULLY chiselling it out. This was the origional seal from the factory (steel and felt). It was unbelievably strong and was really stuck in there. Getting the gear off the shaft was diffacult also. There is no set screw, just the bolt on the end, but this is not a tappered shaft so it comes off hard the whole way. The belt pully seal is only half of your problem there. You'll most likely need to replace the spacer tube also as it will have a grove warn in it. These are available from the dealer. $20 or so last time I checked. That seal is easy to replace as the housing comes off with 3 bolts if I remember right. You'll need a new gasket for this and a new gasket to put the PTO housing back on the tractor if you do end up removing it. Also there is a big, 4" or so, rubber O ring between the PTO and belt pully housings. This is real easy to pinch during reassembly so be careful. Might as well change the transmission lube while your at it as you'll need to drain it if you remove the PTO housing(the belt pully housing has a small pipe plug at the bottom to drain it also). Good luck. Dave...

That will work or just sqeeze a screwdriver under rubber and pry out. They also make a little pry bar that is for pulling seals. Most auto parts stores have them. Good Luck.
