Have a good Super A with a bad, real bad, whine in the rearend. Found a Farmall 140 parts tractor with a good rearend on it. Will the 140 rearend (transmission back) bolt on & work for a Super A? Have tried to find an answer, but am getting conflicting info. Any guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks, H. Fry, Southeast Georgia

Thanks for the advice folks. I did drain the transmission and put in 140. It quieted it a tiny bit; not much. Did not change the fluid in the drives. Have a seal leak on one axle anyway so will pull the pans and take a look. If that don't work will get into it deeper. Will let you know how it goes.
Hugh, thanks for the info on the 140. Will keep that as a last option.

I agree with gene b. I would try to find the cause of the problem before I started canablizing my tractor. If you don't know the exact source of the noise how will you know what parts to replace? Besides new fluids might be all you need. Dave

H Fry: The 140 transmission and rear end will bolt right up to SA front. The experts will tell you, no difference in ratios. Not sure I agree with that as 130 and 140 had larger tires with higher engine rpm, yet they are very close in ground speeds to the Super A. I know this as I have all three. I suspect there is a different gear ratio in final drives. That will not affect the match up in any way. You may find your speeds a bit slower.

All Super A's whine, depends on how bad it is. That is a characteristic of straight cut gears.

CNKS, It's pretty bad. Two of my friends have A's and this whine is twice as bad as their old tractors. When you are running along and then slow down, it gets even louder.
I sure wanted to believe it was just a normal gear noise level.
