Mornin' Guys,

Well, things are going from bad to worse on my ol' Hydro 70 "fixer-upper" that I'm playin' with.

There is a pad on the engine block (arrow in photo) that has the number "301" clearly stamped on it. :>(

Will someone please tell me that I haven't bought a combine engine?

Oh yeah, and if someone would like to have that fancy farmer-installed tool box, I could possibly be persuaded to reluctantly part with it. :>(

Wanna play "Kick-The-Can", anyone? :>)

Allan

Hi Allan,
I had a 715 combine with that 301 in it and that was one sweet running combine until the fan went through the radiator and it heated up to 8000 degrees. It"s supposed to be around 100 HP.
It amazed me that when I went to sell that combine with the blown engine, the blown engine was all that anyone was interested in. Must be in demand for some reason.
Maybe you and I should have a contest to see who has to spend more money- me with the 706, or you and that Hydro 70! ;>}

Well for sure it is not the engine that came with it and the 301 is one engine that i do not like . And for the life of me i do not understand why that after ya rebuild one that they will not last as long as when they were new this goes for all gassers that do not have sleeves . And i don't care who or how it is done.

Sorry, did not mean to upset ya . It is one of my pet peeves on that engine along with the Ford diesels , I use to think that i wanted a 8000 ford till i found out that they don't have sleeves and that ended that idea. Bad enough that to get a 361 or a 407 to live long and healthy ya have to bore them and install the oversize sleeve along with all the other stuff that ya have to to them .

Okay, here's the deal.

Will someone please pass the plate of 310 or 282 diesels? Looks to me like one would shoehorn right in there. 'Spose?

'Course, if I did that, the next thing ya know I'd have to be sprinklin' a little paint and so forth. Seems like one thing always leads to a 'nother. :>(

Well yea ya could and if i was going to go thru all the trouble it would have to be the 310 not the 282 . But why worry about that just run the 301 till it dies , you ain't going to be worken it that hard as a loader tractor and other chore work . And if you are going to be grinding feed i sure as heck would be using the 966 for that . We have had enough problems with the 706 on the grinder , most of the time we use my 806 or the 1066 or even the S/MTA , i can not explain it but but the 706 does not like to grind feed it will either eat a exhust valve or eat a piston . So we just use the other ones and every one in a bluemoon even the old 720 Deere just to clean the carbon out of her when ya put the small screen in that will make her talk .

it shud read 291 , were you have the arrow pointed it would be a tractor motor, 806- 301 mayby, the combine 301 has the stamp on the other side of the block right under the head at the very front of the motor, 301c the c meaning combine , or 301 i the i meant industrial, road graders hope this helps,

Whew!!!

That's kind of a relief! Does that mean that if it is in fact a "tractor 301" that it might still have sleeves?

Appreciate your help,

Allan

Don't know if it is a combine engine or not Allan. I do know how that can effect one's attitude towards an otherwise very nice tractor though. It would bug the heck out of me, I Know. As Far as the tool box goes, I believe it is origional equipment.
