I have LOTS of thick rust that built up between the wheel and weight on 1968 cub. I have spent about an hour banging it off with a ball-pin hammer and wire wheel. What is the best product (available in a hardware store) to use to prevent further rust? Ospho, naval jelly? I am going to turn the wheel around so looks aren't as important as stopping the rust. Thanks alot for your responses.

Martin

Most of these solutions contain phosphoric acid. This acid turns iron oxide (rust) to iron phosphate (nice black finish suitable for painting). I also use it on old tools, old cross cut saws and in general any old rusty stuff that I want to hang on the wall. I use a spray bottle to spray the tool and then just leave it. Gives it a real nice apperance. H3P04 is also used in Coke. Thats why Coke is such a good cleaner. Leave a penny in Coke for about a month and it will disolve!

Ospho hands down! Like they said blast or sand, Use Ospho, then prime and paint. Ospho gets into the pitted areas. Thats my two cents! Max

You would be better off to have them sand blasted
and primed with some good primer paint and then
have them painted with a good top coat. Doing
this will last a long time. Hal

The auto parts store ,Oreily, has a product--ONE STEP--- that converts rust to black primer sealer. The part # is 3509 --brand name mar-hyde, byBondo Corp.

I'll second that on the One Step, or it's sometime counter part - Three in One. I've been very happy with the results.
