I'm getting ready to overhaul the engine in a highcrop M I just got and I'm wondering what is the max that the lobes on the cam can be worn before you can expect valve problems. Can't they be built up and turned back down like a crank shaft?

As the cam wears, the miss get progressively worse, so it is hard to put an exact number on how much is too much. If you have any doubts, why not have the cam reground ? The cost of the regrind compared to the cost of the rebuilt is minor (~$200). Don"t forget to have the lifters refaced also.

My IH manual doesn't list the cam lobe height or any wear limits. Your local auto machine shop
may have that data. They probably need to measure the camshaft journals for wear, if any
wear is indicated it probably would be better to buy a new cam and have new cam bearings installed.
New cam bearings should be installed even if you
use the old cam. Hal
They do list the cam journal measurements:

1. 2.2435"
2. 2.1185"
3. 1.8685"

You can still get brand new 450 cams, that would wake up the old M a bit also, they have left handed threads so if you put on live pump the nut isn't going to come off.
