A neighbor has a offset JD disc plow for sale with 10 front and 10 rear disc which covers about 7 foot of ground per pass. He wants $2,000 for it. I'm thinking my M may be overloaded trying to pull it. Also wondering if the price would be considered as fair. Haven't found anything to compare to in the classifieds. Any advice? Thanks

Their right it all depends if its wheel or drag, 10 blades 9" spacing 7'6". The big point would be blade size 22, 24,26" the bigger the harder the pull. At work we have a 10 blade JD with 24" blades we used to pull with a Ford 3000 with weights and it pulled it, not a purfect set up but we got by, an adjusted if we started to slip. A drag disc you just by setting angle of cut. In our area a 7 to 8' heavy wheel disc go from 1000 to 2300 depending on condition and blade size. Junkers, off brands and light weights go for far less. Drag discs even with 24 or 26" blades go for less with 9" spacing, unless heavy duty. With the price of new wheel running to 7 to 8 thousand depending how equipted I can see the asking price. Allan

Thanks for comments-Should have got the model #. He offered to let me bring home to try out. Will try it and either spin tires or plow. Another neighbor says he has one like it that he uses a JD4020 to pull and he also doubts the M will move it with the disc set down.

There is a vast difference in disks, weight, size of blade, concave, etc. Then there are these guys pulling humungus worn out disks with Farmall M's. These worn out disks are usually about as effective as land roller, thus a good working Super A should pull one.

I had a Bush Hog offset, model 146 if I remember correctly, 24 blade , blades were 26" diameter on close to 10" spacing and frame was solid 4"x 4" steel as opposed to tubing. Farmalls 560D and 656D wouldn't touch it. It took a 100 hp, plus 10,000 lbs. of tractor to pull it. (4 tires pulling were also beneficial.) Go back to the John Deere, compare those specs. Size of blade, concave and weight is what will take the hp.

Only you can judge for yourself from this and what others have told you. By the way, worn out disks have nothing more than scrap value.

I use to have a 7 ft. Roam and it was all a 400D or a 460D needed.

Ask your neighbor if you can have test run on the disc plow using your M. I don't think it will handle it. Hal

You have seen it and you think it is too much implement. No one here has seen it. I would go with my own instincts on this. If that isn't enough then I would add that you can get a heck of nice old disk for a lot less money that will match up to an M perfectly.

Are you talking about an offset Disc? My A John Deere is the same size power and weight as the M Farmall. I pulled a Towner 9 blade per gang front and rear, 22" blades that cut 8' wide with a John Deere KBA drag type 6 -18" blades per side hooked back of mine in corn stuble in 4th gear but with the weight of the unit with no added weight would not cut over 3" deep on first time over, The Towner was a drag type with hydrolic angle and no wheels and made in the same time frame as these tractors, At that time Case also made a wheel carried offset disk in the same size as my Towner for the DC tractor that is also the same size as thr A or the M. Now are you talking a modern wheel carried heavy frame type of offset disk? If so then that size no of blades would cut 10-11' and would be one of these units that they require 100 HP and that could be in the ball park for the newer unit but for the older unit sold and sized for your tractor $500 tops.

I dont know how big the JD plow is, but we used to have a B20 IH offset with 10 in the back and 10 in the front and my M pulled the daylghts out of it 4th gear. I dont recall how wide it was but I do know for a fact there were 20 disc on it.

Well think about it they where on either a 9 inch spacing or a 7 inch spacing so it was not as big as what this guy is talking about and it probably only had 16 or 18 inch blades . I rebuilt a 10 foot offset for a guy and the blades on his where 28" on the ft and 26" on the back and he was TRYEN to pull it with a 1568 and it was all that it wanted and on the hills he had to lift it up because he did not have the traction with those monster tire even though they where loaded i can't remember what the size was but thinking that they were 23.1 34 or bigger and had wheel weights stacked out past the tires .

Like I said, I dont know the plow hes talking about. But what I do know for a fact is there were 10 disc in the front set of gangs and 10 in the back.The spacers,which I just walked out and measured were 19" long,one of the old disc I replaced that was broken was about 19 1/2" across. The thing was wore out when I got it needing the bearings replaced and several broken discs.The hydraulic cylinder leaked badly.Like I aid I dont know the offset harrow hes talking about, and a pic would be helpful, but I know the harrow I had ,had 20 disc total on it.

We used to pull a 10 foot with a JD 4020 and it was a real load for the 4020. My guess would be that a 7 foot would be too much for an M. Price sounds a little high to me.

Black Smoke;

I think the price is way high. Some years back I saw one sell for $600. It was a JD 12 ft. offset. If you can try it out that would be the way to go.
