So, here's what happened.

I spot this nice little hydro 70, right? I think it would be a fun old tractor to fix up. Shouldn't take much, right?

Guys, the Hydro 70 sets off all by itself as far as sheet metal goes. Nothin' interchanges with it.

I just ordered a new radiator grille screen and grille. Believe me fellas, ya really don't wanna go there..... ... :>(

My CaseIH parts manual TC164 for 666, H70, 686 and H86 must be incomplete or something as it lists one grill PN.65491c1 as fitting the 666, 70, 686 and 86. The same with the screen behind the grille PN, 65492c1. The only differance up front is a bigger oil coller for the hydros. As for the hood it lists one for the gassers, one for the german 310 and one for the american 312 for all four tractors. The fuel tank hood is the same for all four as are the side panels and drop panals up front and the cowl. The parts manual is a recent CASEIH reprint of the original IH manual so it should be up to date?

Hi Scott,

Yep, those were the first words out of the fella"s mouth at CaseIH. "Oh, those old things are all the same".

Til he looked up the parts on the computer.

I think the tractor"s demensions are the same as the old narrow 656 but the sheet metal and so forth has the newer style "squared-off" look to it like the 66s and the 86s. That put"s "em off by themselves.

All I know is that the radiator screen and the plastic grill cost me over $400. A year ago, I bought the same pieces for my 966 and it came at a cost of $100.

I tried the salvage yards and they won"t let "em go because they save and use the parts to build up complete tractors because they are in such a high demand now.

Dunno,

Allan

Oh I see what you were getting at, comparing the 966 grill to the hydro 70 grille. The 666 H70 686 H86 grilles are all the same but they are smaller then the bigger frame 966-1466 grilles resulting in the premium price I suppose.

Hi Allan,
A wise friend recently told me that the pain you"re feeling is just part of the ritual we go through when we start fixing up a tractor. ;>) Maybe ya just want to part it out instead. Do ya think that motor would fit in a 706?
Nah, getting a tractor like that is what keeps us young. Gives you something to think about, fret about, work on, swear at, and enjoy. This year it"s a Hydro 70. Maybe next year a 1206, or a 504, or a WD-40. It"s all fun as long as a person isn"t truly going broke doing it. I"ve been thinking lately about what a nasty thing it would be to see all my stuff go to auction. I know you"ve been there and we"ve talked about this before.

Hi Paul,

I was sure thinking about you this morning when I ordered those parts afer exhausting every salvage yard in this country.

Heck, usually parts will cross models and model years. Take the Hydro 86 fer instance. Many of it's parts will cross over to the 686 or to the 666. Not this one. This silly guy stands there all alone.

For these particular parts, they were exactly 4 times higher than their counterparts on a 966. :>(

So, I guess what I'm saying is that if a feller had the choice, maybe pick another tractor other than the Hydro 70 to doll up. :>)

Ouch. . . Don't you hate it when something like that happens? Man, I have never really looked at one close up, I would have just assumed that they would interchange with the other tractors. At least you didn't go out and buy a bunch of other sheet metal figuring it would fit and then go out and find it doesn't fit, and then go and order the right sheet metal. Wait, that sounds like something I would do!!!

Aw heck Rusty, you know how I am; gotta fix it right. :>)

Although, I did find a nice set of used fenders (I think) at a pretty reasonable price and tires on this little guy are way cheaper than the larger sizes are.

Oh well, here we go again. :>)
