Finally got the contrary head off the 43H using a little of all Your advice. The first thing I noticed is all four pistons are smaller than the sleeves. The sleeves measure 3 3/8. The pistons as good as I can measure are 3 1/4", and are step faced. The sleeves don't seem worn much, but there is a lot of black soot or carbon build up on top of all pistons. I just got the tractor this summer and shredded a little with it and it pulled and turned a 6ft shredder, but I can't understand how it ran at all. Guess I need more advice about what to do next. It seems to me undersized pistons were installed. Is that O.K. or do I need to replace them?

I think you had better pull one of pistons too.
With that much clearance those pistons should've been making a lot of noise. Hal

Your measurements cannot be correct as from what you say there is 62thous clearence between piston and cycl wall. That is 1/16in clearence all around. Engine would have made terrible noises and not enough compression to even start. Take pistons out for a better measurement.

What may have been done was the sleeves where bored and over size rings installed on the pistons. Not the best way to go but years ago a lot of companys offered them. I've seen rings in .010-.040, it worked but they wore faster and all. I just did an engine that I could have done that with but instead I went with a 10 over piston instead of just 10 over rings
