Took the PTO apart on the Super-C and knocked out this massive seal with two leathers with springs and a felt seal on the outside. The replacement I received from the dealer was this little bitty whimpy 1/4 inch thick single seal. Does any one know if the old style seal is still available? The new "improved" version doesn't look like it would hold up long.

The technology in that new seal makes it far superior to leather and felt. I have faith in them, I have used them on two H's, doing brake shafts, pto's,drive shaft and hyrdaulic shaft etc and have never had a failure, I do not believe in putting two seals in place of the old, you double your expense and there is no need for it. You can place the seal in a position where it is away from any wear on the shaft, you have this range to work with. Good luck AC, the seal will be fine..Mike in Exeter Ontario

Michael, I am with you. I do not understand why anyone would want to put two seals in place of one of the old leather seals. These new seals are used on everything today and have been for years and are not doubled up. I myself have used them for years and they last longer than the old leather seals. As some of the others said, all you will do with two seals is wear out the outer one because of no lubrication. Also, as others said, you can position the single seals on the best part of the staft for maximum sealing. Roger

AC, Everyone has brought up some very good suggestions. One thing I might add ,is that as you know, the counterbore that holds the seal is quite deep and that you can position that seal anywhere on your PTO shaft that has a minimal amount of wear on it to get the most benifit from your new seal. As some of the guys suggested put a small amount of grease on the lip of your new seal.

Install 2 seals & put some grease in between them so the outer one is not running dry.

That wimpy 1/4 inch seal is better than the old leather ones. I think I used 3 on mine -- of course the outer two don't get any lubrication until the inner one leaks, by then the outer ones may be shot because they are running dry.

The original style is obsolete, no longer available. You need to istall a pair of the new style seals, and could probably install about a half dozen of them in the same space.

Thanks for helping me out. I considerd using more than one seal and now I will. Wonder if I could find a felt that would fit betweem them?

It would be a good idea to pack a little grease between the two seals so the outer seal has lubrication or it will rapidlly wear out. Acually two seals are not really needed as the new seals have much better wear and sealing power than the old leather type. Most equipment since the 60's has had the narrow type seals and they for the most part have stood up well to time and use.
