I have a IHC 1486 that is stuck in the high range. I know that this is a common problem and was wondering how to get it out of gear. Happened to me once when I was cultivating for a friend and he took care of it for me the next day when I was at work so it was ready to go the next day for me after work. Do I have to pull the seat up to do this? Any assistance would be appreciated.

You do not need to pull the seat. Follow the linkage down to the range transmission cover. You'll see two arms on top of the cover, the outer arm is for the reverse shifter, the arm just inside of the reverse arm is for high and low range. It has three detented positions, one for high, neutral in the middle, and one for low. grab that arm with a pliers or vise grip and turn it back to the middle position. Test your results by starting the engine and SLOWLY releasing the clutch pedal in each range. If the engine starts to stall, you're still stuck. You've got some major wear in your shift linkage and the detents under the cover. Get this fixed right away, as getting in two ranges and letting up the clutch pedal is a good way to do some serious damage.
