Can anyone tell me how to solve this problem. I put a rebuilt hydralic pump in my 340 and now when I start it up it squeals real loud for about 5 minutes and the the noise subsides. There is plenty of fluid in the tractor. The lift function works. What is the fix?.

Wayne, Every once in awhile my 340 Farmall will lose its prime, I bleed the air out of the system by breaking the big line where it meets the hose if that doesn't work I try it up at the valve bank. Good luck PUTTER

Joe,
The 460 has an internal pump, were as the 340's pump in located in front of the tractor on the ignition side.

chadd's comments are well reasoned and check out what he suggests.

Our 460's system was a mess for years. When we installed a new pump, the high pressure made other problems in the system come to light. Before, the old pump was SO bad, it didn't matter if anything else was messed up. Couldn't tell one way or the other.

Anyway, the condition you describe certainly is similar to what we experienced. Our problem was solved by replacing a thoroughly damaged and plugged orifice and orifice screen.

All this rambling is assuming a 340 is made like a 460 with respect to the hydraulics. I think they are.

Check to see that there aren't any stuck valves in the hydraulic unit. If a valve were stuck, the fluid would be forced through the smaller relief valve opening. If your pump was really weak before, it is possible that it didn't matter, and now with the new pump making tons of pressure, the oil won't travel through the relief valve fast enough. This would also be accompanied by a load on the engine. Also, check to be sure that there is no air in the system(ie. bleed it). Hydraulic pumps don't like running air through, so that will also make noise. Where does it sound like the squeal is coming from? If it is from the pump, I would guess air. If it is back by the control valves(just in front of your feet I think), I would guess a plugged screen or a stuck valve.

The noise is coming from the pump. Is there a bleeder on the valve body? or does it matter where to bleed off the air?.

On the larger tractors, the way that you would remove air from the system was to open the fill plug and cycle the hydraulic system for a while. For instance, if you have power steering, you would cycle the steering wheel from lock to lock 10 or 12 times, raise and lower the three point hitch 10 to 12 times, etc. I am not sure with a 340. I know one person who has a 340 that the hydraulics quit working on. Supposedly, the pump lost its prime, and no amount of running would get the air out. I am not sure how the mechanic got it primed again, but he did. There are a lot of other people on this site who own 340's; surely one of them would know.
