I have a 1939 H and I replaced the spring with one from the rear of an older chevy Cavaler (about 1984). I had the "falling of the back of the seat" because I weigh more than 300 pounds problem also. The bottom of the spring is a little large but I used a large flat washer and made a spacer to center the spring. Has worked real well on this working tractor.

Look on the top (large end) of your springs. They were marked with small notches near the end of the spring; the more notches, the stronger the spring.
I found one with 4 notches this summer. Haven"t tried it out yet.

LouH, I got the heavier spring that BobM referred to and it made a big difference on my C. I used to feel like I was going to tumble off the back. I am close to 300 pounds if that gives you some idea of what to expect before you order.

Could you share where you found the heavyweight spring? I have a couple of neighbors who need them and I saw them noted in my parts manuals. One has a Monroe seat with the shock absorber on the back with the spring in the middle. All my Farmalls have the spring on the back and they seem a little soft but afterall they are over 50 uears old now. Thanks, Hal

Hal -

I think I got mine from Carter & Gruenewald: www.cngco.com.

But that was several years ago so I'm not positive...

Re: H SEAT SPRING - Bermuda Ken (Are you reading) in reply to Bob M, 10-25-2005 11:10:26
Thanks Bob, I guess that would be an IH part as I think C&G (Bermuda Ken) is a Case IH dealer. I can send them an e-mail and see what they have to offer. I had heard earlier only the standard spring was still available. The spring on my Super C hydraulic seat is quite soft as a football coach (big guy) had the tractor for 40+ years before I purchased it this spring. My brother-in-law has the opposite problem as his won't compress enough so he can sit level on his M. He gets fatigued pushing back into the seat. He can only stay in the saddle for a couple hours comfortably. His problem might be from that long Monroe shock absorber mounted on the back which might take considerable weight to compress any further. Hal

Lou - If you can locate one, get an IHC part 354 670 R2 spring (parts catalog description: Spring, seat, special, for heavyweight operators). It's noticably stiffer than the stock spring.

However like Rusty I too have observed where owners have stuck a second smaller spring inside the stock spring to stiffen the seat suspension. Also saw once a small, softball-size playground ball stuffed inside a seat spring - I suppose resulting in a poor man's "air ride" suspension!

I've seen several Hs and Ms with 2 springs, one inside the other. Thinking of doing that myself, not that I am large, I am sure that the springs must be weaker these days.(:

If you have the type that has the shock absorber on the back you could replace the shock with a coil over model like on a motorcycle. Those usually have adjustable tension and can be found in junk yards. Just an idea.
