I saw a 300 on the side of the raod today stoped and it looked pretty good till I saw the craked block. It's cracked right below the "indent" in the block on the left side of the tractor (the carb side). The crack is about 4 or 5 inches long. I can see the rod sticking throught the block. What could have caused this to happen. Can this be fixed? Or would it need a new block? Thanks for the help Andrew Z

Seems to be entirely too common on Super H/300/350's. Rod bolts breaking is also another cause of ventilated blocks on these engines. Unfortunately these tractors were too little for most of the things they got asked to do and got run VERY hard in the early stages of their lives. I know My Super H was too small for about everything It got hitched to when Dad was farming. And if it finally got hitched to something it could handle We shifted UP a gear and pulled it faster and harder!

I would agree with with what the others have said,
buy a good engine or block and rebuild it. Then you know what you have. I doubt if the crankshaft
is salvageable too. A good auto machine shop can determine if it's bent. Hal

Rod through the side of the block is bad news. Usually a good sign the engine lost oil pressure or coolant dumped into the oil, rod bearing then seized, and connecting rod broke. I bet there's a lot of damage to that crankshaft. Block could very well be junk, depending if that rod went through any oil gallies or coolant passages. I wouldn't even mess with that engine. Lots of good H, 300, 350 engines out there that you could pick up cheap and bolt in or rebuild.

Andrew, I've heard of guys welding blocks and /or drilling and pinning blocks. This after new sleeve and other repairs. A rod comes through the block when a bearing lets go or a wrist pin breaks and as the engine turns the rod is a loose cannon flying around in there at all angles until it gouges into the wall of the block and "Bang" its through the wall of the block..can be fixed, I'd likely find another block personally, if I have to rebuild its going to be a good block..not to say that some breaks are very successfully repaired...Mike in Exeter Ontario
