I recently noted in a discussion here that one should not use the T/A in 5th gear. NOT was stressed. The operators manual does not mention this. I have been using my T/A in 5th, hauling round hay bales, etc. Would be interested in others opinions and experiences. Thanks in advance. DC

You can start out with the TA back and throw it ahead to help get moving in 5th, but do not try to pull it back to slow the tractor down, especially heading downhill with a heavy load behind you. Trying to use the TA for engine braking to slow a heavy load is not good for it.

Hi George,

That's crap. Heck, that's what the T/A is for: to use.

Our 400 and 350U have been used in fifth for 45+years W/O grief starts are easy on the tractor and clutch in 5th TA back, then put it forward rapidly not slowly. Just short of letting it go is the right speed to shift it.

You can use it in 5th. Just make sure you have the lever forward or it will free wheel when stopping or going over a hill. I found out the hard way with 2 wagon loads of corn when I was a kid. Made it to the bottom of the hill...but almost wet my pants.
