You may remember from my post a week ago that I was looking at a Farmall 706D, WF, fast hitch, DH, for $2200. The down side is I was told that it needed a head gasket. Well, I bought it before the auction from the jockey. I was told that it ran, and that the TA and other things have had recent work.
Well, nothing he said so far has come true. I have bought things from him before and he"s been alright to deal with, but a salesman is a salesman. I should know better. I can"t even get it started with a block heater and ether. I guess I"ll pop the head off and see what"s up, but I wanted to get it to run to see if anything else needs repair before I stick a bunch of money into the motor. It is nice and straight, sheet metal wise. I will post a picture when I take the time to figure out how. The TA is hydraulic, I believe, but should I be able to pull start the tractor with the TA in one position or the other? I know the mechanical ones need to be back to keep from freewheeling.
Well, I guess I"m in the "bought a pig in a poke" stage. It will be handy when it"s running, but I hope it"s not a $10,000 706 by the time it"s done.

Hey ol' Pard,

This is kind of an expensive thing we do. So far, I've "adopted" three of these old tractors that were supposed to "be okay". They never are; it is a fact of life.

Don't kid yourself, you will easily spend the $10K and probably more on the tractor, but don't ya think that is way smarter than buyin' one of the new plastic ones they sell nowadays?

You bought a 706 diesel with a factory wide front for $2200. You just bought a legend and I think you just skinned the other guy.

Heck, have fun with it. Open her up, put a motor, a clutch and a T/A in it and then see where you are at that point.

Believe me, you won't take $10K for it when you're done because that old tractor is sure worth the pain. Ya just got to get across that mental "ouchy" part.

Happens every time and it happens to all of us. It is part of our "ritual". :>)

Hi Allan
You do make a good point and have a nice way of putting it. I like my old tractors and have run many in the past, but I"m torn between that and trying to run a business with the old stuff. The "bottom line" of the business makes me wonder if it was a wise decision, but the other part of me is looking forward to doing just what you said and having a nice 706 in the end. I expected to do some work on it anyway.

I guess it"s just time to get on with the ritual.....

Glad to here you got it not glad to here the rest although the guys on here are right its a good tractor and you will be happy later. I would continue to get it running before I tore it down thats just me. Some guys say thats wrong but thats how I would do it. I wouldn't take the head off without going the rest of the way on the motor though. Good luck

Paul, the hydraulic TA will not engage without hydraulic pressure, which means no tow starting...

Doesn't matter anyway, because there's no magic to tow starting. If the tractor won't fire on the electric starter, it won't fire if you towed it from here to China and back...

There may or may not be anything wrong with the TA. Don't pass judgement on it just yet.

BTW, the mechanical TAs need to be "ahead," in direct mode, to keep from freewheeling.

Yeah, I kind of figured that the hydraulic TA worked like that, needing hyd pressure. I"m not sure that I agree entirely about tow starting. When an engine has compression as bad as this one, towing will get more speed on the engine, more compression, more heat, and it will build oil pressure which can help seal leaky rings. I"ve started things before by towing that didn"t want to start otherwise. There"s no question that the engine is sick though.
And you"re right about the mechanical TA needing to be ahead. I don"t know what i was thinking!
I just wish that I could get it running to see of the TA needed anything before the $ drain begins.

Well since i am the local GURU on the 06 seires tractors and i have had every nut and bolt out of them on many occasions one thing that is fact is that you can tow it from the east coast to the west and it will not tow start . since it is a 282 the first thing is to see if the glow plugs are working then to see if it is getting fuel . Now not to bring gloom and doom to your new toy it is not uncommon for them to have a cracked head or block now don't panic the head is fixable along with the block but you will have a total rebuild , i have fixed several of them and they are fine now i never turn up a 282 above 10% this is when ya get into trouble and they MUST have warm up time and cool down time or ya got the same problem . Now if ya get into it and ya need help just howler i can walk ya through the whole tractor .

Hi, "Vet
Yes, the glow plugs work, although I didn"t check all of them. And I know that they all need to work or it won"t start. It"s got a nice little tank heater on it that i plugged in and got the whole engine block up to well over 100 degrees F. Then i squirted a little ether in the intake WITHOUT using the glow plugs and still nothing. It ought to at least pop a little. I can hear most of the compression leaking out the exhaust. The injectors are delivering fuel- you can see that coming out the exhaust in blue puffs of smoke. I was kind of suspecting a cracked head, but not the block too. I"m big on warm-up and cool-down for engines of all types, but of course I"m not the one that trashed it.

If you hear compression leaking out of the exhaust, maybe try adjusting the valves. Maybe the valves are just so far out of adjustment that they aren't completely closing. Good luck with that 706. The 06 tractors are great when they are in good running order.

You could well be right. I will have to take the valve cover off anyway, so it certainly makes sense to check it out. Thanks!

Got news for ya she ain't getting fuel , it has to have a littel fuel even with either she go or eit her she blow . Or there is no rings left in it. Crack the injector lines and crank it and see if it is getting fuel , if not remove the timming plate on the pump and see if the pump is turning could be a sheared pump shaft.

No one makes it through life without being taken on a deal at least once. The bright side, its a good machine when up and running. If its not worth fixing then you got a parts tractor worth more than you paid for it.
