Hi , I have a couple of question's about the type's of transmission's on a M , SM or SMTA . Did either the M or SM ever come from the factory with a TA ? If not , has there ever been a way to put one on ? Did either one come with any kind of auxilliary transmission ? Finally , what year and model is this serial # FBK134666 X1 ? Thanks ...Randy

Randy, I have a 1951 M with a Heisler 9 speed aux. transmission. I recall from some old sales info. I saw that Heisler was located in Newton, Iowa. Heisler has been out of business for years but like M&W made a lot of aftermarket items for the larger letter series Farmalls. Like the M&W 9 speed it adds four additional speed ranges between the standard 4th and 5th. I believe the M&W has an engagement knob with a cable to something in the transmission. On the Heisler there is an additional lever to the left and forward of the standard shift lever which provides engagement input to the transmission through rigid linkage. My Heisler also has an additional control rod to disengage the belly pump when in high range as to not overspeed the pump. Hope this helps and the 9 speed is really a very nice aftermarket option. Hal

I'm with makin'hay and JT it probably has the M&W 9 speed which gives you 4 more gears between 4th and 5th, great for raking hay etc. The TA was never available on the regular M. The SM was intoduced in 1952 but they only had the TA in 1954. As far as value the best i can give is a restored SMTA with everything M&W made for it on it sold over $10,000 for sure, I believe it was $16,000(don't quote me)at the county fair. Hope this helps, JaredM.

Randy, what are you doing, changing colors? I thought you were Oliver all the way. Just kidding, I have a Farmall H I bought before my 1650d. The best 2 tractor brands, in my small mind. I"ve only played with a TA unit once, from what I remember hear about them, they work great when adjusted right. Not sure how much a rebuild would cost, guess it would depend on if someone else or you did the work. Just remember, it will cause the tractor to free-wheel down hill, just like the under drives on the Olivers. I have no experiences with any other trans. on the Farmalls. Good luck with your purchase. Rich

Hi Rich , How you been ? No not changing , adding to . You know it's almost Christmas and a little red to go with all the green around here will make it kind of cheerfull !:-) I got a straight m off of e-bay . It's supposed to have some sort of auxiliary trany on it . The price was ok but I ain't write'n home to mom about it . It look's ok from the pictures . I went and looked at one here for close to $400 more and thought I liked this one more . We'll see if I got took again ! I expect I'll have to do a bit of rebuilding on all this old stuff I buy , I consider it part of the game . Do you like your truck aside from the fuel prices skyrocketing ? They'll go back down some as soon as they get caught up with heating oil production ( yeah right ! ) . Just tryin to look on the upside if there is one . Take care ...Randy

Nothing wrong with multiple colors, more to enjoy, that"s all. Good luck w/ the new M, my H isn"t much, but I got it running pretty good after new plugs, wires, heavier batt. cables, etc. The M should do you good. I wasn"t gifted with the knowledge to work on engines and the like. So, I look for good running tractors, I can fix most of the other equipment, just not engines, hyd. pumps, or electrical parts. Doesn"t leave much, does it?

Other than the price of fuel, I love my truck, wish it had a manual trans though. Gets the same milage as my F150 did; 15-16 mpg, so I"m happy. I just remind myself this truck will handle anything I need to pull/ haul for quite a while. Last tank cost me $84 for 28 gals, but I was the one that bought the truck. Take it easy, Rich

I presume that you are talking about the tractor in "photo ads". CNKS talked about it briefly in the topic MCH that was recently posted.

It seems hard to imagine that an auxilary transmission could be fitted behind the motor without adding alot of frame steel for support. YOu should ask the seller to send you better photos.

It also seems odd that this tractor is in ID and was formerly in a salvage yard with 20 other similar tractors. CNKS says that he could see a cotton harvester decal on it.

Hi Wardner , No I don't go to the ad's on here much but maybe I should so I can compare prices to see if I'm getting taken ( I usually do ! ) . I don't know enough about tractor's to get a good deal . But I also impulse buy ( best way to get took ) instead of waiting for something better to come along . Besides , I like reworking these thing's to get some use out of them . Paint's not important . But part's availability is . ...Randy

Hi , OOP'S , I never even thought to look on the left of this page for the serial # . Thank's for doing it for me . About the speed changer , was it a good unit ? Are part's available to fix it ? Can I find the answer's to these question's on this page too :-) ? Just joking ! How does this second box work ? The reason I ask is I might be buying a M with one , it was advertised as having an auxiliary tran's but that confused me ;') since it wasn't advertised as anything but a M . Thank's ...Randy

according to the serial number list on the left side of this page, it is a 1947, They built a SM with a TA, called a SMTA. could get an aftermarket speed changer for the M from M & W called M&W nine speed.

Hi JT and Makin hay , That might be what it is . I'll know more when I go to pick it up in Cornell , WI . It's about 275 miles from me as the crow flies . I should be able to go up there next weekend . ...Randy
