We have a farmall 300 as well as an M that were originally from my grandfather's farm. When he retired in the 70's all of the equipment was auctioned off except for the 300 and a few implements which have been used ever since for cutting wood, plowing gardens, mowing, etc... Anyways, one of the rear tires is starting to go flat. The question is would we be asking for trouble if we replaced both rear tubes and just left out the ballast, only using air? It rarely is used for plowing and the heaviest work it does is pulling logs or a wagon in the woods.

You may be able to get by without it but it is UNBELIEVABLE what approx. 700 lbs. in each 13.6x38 tire will do. CC will make a tractor out of any machine. Glenn F.

redin: Not quite sure I agree with some of these guys. Some of the hardest pulls I've ever done with a tractor has been in the woodlot harvesting wood. I've seen my old 300 with 5 ton behind it on many ocasions. Secondly woodlots tend not to be smooth, having hummocks, cradle hills over tree roots. You start draging whole trees over that terrain, it will make tractor pulling look like hauling feathers. That calcium chlorides does two things for you, gives you traction and it gives you lower center of graviety ballast. That lower center of graviety ballast is very important when one wheel goes over one of those 15" high cradle hills.

There may be nothing wrong with your tubes, first I'd try installing new screw in portion of the valve stems and then pump the tires. There is nothing wrong with calcium chloride, so long as you don't have leaks. It also takes a lot of cast iron weights to replace that chloride and they still don't give that low center of graviety.

Someone can correct me if this is wrong, I've heard liquid ballast in the tires makes a tractor safer because all that weight is down on the ground. Is tipping the tractor ever an issue? If not, I'd go with the weights. If so, safety is priceless.

I wouldn't add any ballast and I would wash that
rim good to get rid of any calcium. It's very hard to dispose of that anymore around here and they're using used antifreeze instead. You shouldn't have any problems plowing. Hal

Getting rid of the liquid ballast is a very good idea. If you find later that the tractor is lacking traction you can add a set of cast iron wheel weights, but for the way you are using it I doubt you will ever need it.

Another question- What exactly is the Torque Amplifier and how does it work? It has never worked on this tractor (as long as I have been around) but I gather it is supposed to essentially provide a low range?

Results in 10 forward speeds, a low range in each gear, may be shifted up or down on the go -- Do NOT try downshifting in 5th.

Trouble?--No, not for what you use it for.
