1940 M hand crank start problem

I got a hand crank for my M. The crank fits fine on the outside nipple in front/bottom of the grill. However, when I look behind the radiator I do not see where the hand crank shaft ties into the engine shaft -- there is about a 1 and 1/2" gap. Looking through a little hole in the frame I can see that hand crank shaft inside apparently wrapped in a heavy duty spring. The service and operator manuals are useless. Sorry if my terminology is wrong, but how do I get the hand crank to engage? I don't want to start the tractor with it -- just rotate everything so the starter teeth don't grind everytime I start it up. thanks

You need to push hard at the same time your turning the crank. The shaft should shift in and engage the crank pully. Some times over time they sort of lock up and you may need to tap on it a few times to get it to slide in and turn at the same time.

Old has it in his post. The only addition would be that the drive coupler and shaft complnents may be gone for some unknown reason. in which case no pushing in will work.

I do the same thing for my H.
Only thing I'd add to what the other guys said is that there's a grease fitting you reach from underneath. If I don't give mine a squirt every now and then it sticks, needs a squirt and a tap.

Thanks -- It was painted before I got it and I think everything is stuck together. I didn't want to start hammering anything until I asked.
