greetings gentlemen... have a quick 2 questions..
what is the difference in shape between the steped vs firecrater pistons.. 2nd question.. my student has an A and on his pistons the oil control ring is located below the wrist pin and about 1/2" above the bottom of the skirt... why the different style of piston,,, and will a standard ring kit work?? I know that was 3 questions.. thanks in advance

Firecraters are stepped head pistons, but they are not like "normal" stepped pistons. My '57 230 has Firecraters. Looking thru the spark plug hole, they have a depression in the center of the step, hence "...crater". IH had three different types of altitude engines back then. Sealevel had the "flats", then they had a 4000 foot and an 8000 foot engine. Only guessing but as we know that the higher altitude you go the less power a normally aspirated engine has (lack of oxygen). The high altitude engines were to compensate for the standard sealevel HP. Not sure which one I have but it dyno'd at 32HP, whereas the standard 230 was rated at about 28HP. Matter of fact I plowed the garden with the FastHitch C20 on the 230 this morning (found NOS Plow Chief points for the C20). Good sharp plow points really do make a difference! Are the pistons on your A cast iron? The original IH pistons in my H were cast iron and fit a 3-3/8" bore. The oil ring was below the wrist pin on them too. The replacement pistons available now are aluminum and sized for a 3-7/16" bore and have the oil ring above the wrist pin. Keep in mind the fact that your engine was designed with the best technology that the 1930"s had to offer.

You will have to measure each of the ring groove widths and diameter on your piston to get the right ring set.

You may be better off to install a new sleeve and piston kit. You would get the new seals for the bottom of the sleeves too. Those seals have been known to leak. The engine would good for another 50 years with good care. Hal

from the looks of everything, valves, crank, sleves.. I believe it was rebuilt once.. but never run much after that, The #2 and #3 rod caps were reversed.. kinda confirming the rebuild theory. Everything is at specs...

The pistons with the oil ring BELOW the wrist pin are typically M&W pistons. Stock IH Rings won't work on this piston.

Firecrater is the term IH trademarked. Stepped head is the term used by others. Firecraters have a higher compression ratio = MORE HP!!!
