OK I'm way out in left field on this one, but someone out there is sure to know:

I've got a mid eighties Murray garden Tractor with and 18HP B&S twin engine. I cut the lawn the other day and when I went to park it with the big red tractor she wouldn't shut off. The problem turns out the whole damn wiring harness was wrapped around the steering column.

Now I figured most of it out but there are two wires (a black and a white) that head back to the front of the motor right of the carb and just under the fan shroud, I assume they are for the generator but don't know where the hook up.

Any ideas?

I'd go to the throttle plate near the carb. Sometimes there's a clip that hold the bare end of the kill wire on that plate. I've seen cases where the wire falls out of the clip and you can't shut it off. I think your two-wires just have to do with charging and lights - look for that third kill-wire.

Mines about ten years newer, I think it either goes back up to the hot wire on the switch or possibly the solenoid. Your may be different. The site below has your owners manual on line, possibly, just need your numbers. The manual has a diagram that will help, but yes the two wires are the charging system, the single wire is the kill wire.

Sticking my head out here a bit, but there is a kill wire that grounds out the points through the ignition switch on most B&S motor powered mowers. This connection is normally connected to the points (may also be mounted on a plate that has throttle controls on it if the throttle can shut the motor off to like on 70’s vintage Snapper mowers). The other one could be for the generator as you suspected, again located under the flywheel. I’d pull the shroud and start looking for wire ends that match the torn off wires.

Hope this helps…

ok the black n white wires coming from under the flywheel are both alternator wires. One is for the lights only,(thinking its the white one)and one with the diode,is black, these will be parallel into a two wire connector.a test light will prove which one is what by starting it,and the brighter of the 2 will be the headlights.(i guess diodes have some resistance).most mowers I see have a yellow wire for the coil-magneto ground till it gets onto the block.theres usually a insulated post near the throttle and governor linkages that holds the end of the coil-magneto ground(small black) and the yellow magneto (switch) ground together and this wire will be grounded by the starter switch.ya can kill it by grounding the same insulated bolt to the block in a fix like you were in.the safety switches on most have 2 parts too btw,one side for the magneto kill and one side to disable the starter solenoid.usually the yellow wires on the safety switches are also for coil-magneto to ground.hope this makes some sense and helps.
