I just had a crazy idea. I have a 400 with the t/a shot. The teeth on the input shaft, output shaft and the planet gears are missing in action. The crazy idea I had was to sneak in there and weld the input shaft to the planet gears and the planet gears to the output shaft so that it is basically direct through (No T/A).

Has anybody heard of this being done or does it sound plain crazy.

Generally when the T/a is shot they go ahead and work in direct, just not in the lower range. Is it not moving in either range?

Since the input shaft gears and all of the planet gears are shot, I don't think it would work in either range. I think it only works in one range if the sprague clutch is shot.

If you're set on not fixing the TA, I believe others here have stated there is a kit available with a straight through shaft that will be a better fix and fit right in.

That defeats the purpose. The parts to eliminate the T/A are almost as much as replacing the T/A and you still have to tear it down. If I was going to do that I would just replace the T/A.

I am really looking for a repair that will allow me to use the tractor until I can afford to replace the T/A

Thanks

The only problem with your welding idea is that once you have welded it up, I doubt anyone would give you a core charge for yours, which makes replacing it that much more expensive. Although, if I am wrong (most likely), someone let me know.

I think you can weld just the planet gears to make it work.

The T/A is nice to have, but not necessary for what I do.
