O.K. yesterday ya'll help me figure out I have the hole in my hood that is used on distullate models. on the block just below the #1 spark plug (or rather the plug closest to the operator) is stamped "6722DJ". On the carborator when standing on the left side of the tractor facing the carb is stamped "8557D". Just where the gov'r. shaft connects to the carb is a circular brass tag "47387DB" which I understand this to be the model #. Does anyone know which model I have by comparing these numbers. Remember My serial # plate is missing so I don't know the exact serial # or year. Also if it helps My axles are stamped "6735 DB RH" and 6734 DB LH". Also on the right side of the transmission just forward of the brakes is stamped "8002 DD" and a brass tag below that "3-18-47" with "39" stamped beside that. between the seat and the steering column base is also a brass tag "4-17-47"

Lots of part numbers, and some stuff that doesn't make sense, but not the piece of information necessary to determine whether you have a true distillate tractor or not...

The brass tags with the dates on them are not OEM as far as I know. These were added by someone, perhaps the dealer, perhaps to indicate when the tractor was serviced?

You should be able to find a machined flat spot on the side of the engine where serial number is truly stamped INTO the metal. Where you're saying "stamped," I would say that "cast" would be the more appropriate term.

Remember, this tractor could very easily have had many things changed, including the hood, block, or any other component. It's not necessarily "numbers matching" original, and without the serial number tag, we can only make an educated guess as to what the tractor originally was.

Also remember that a distillate carb has the brass petcock on the bottom.

"47387DB" is the distillate carb, as opposed to 50983 on the gas carb. "3-18-47" is a casting code- March 18, 1947, and 4-17-47 is also a casting code, April 17, 1947. So your M is an early 1947 model. The other numbers you mentioned are nothing more than part numbers, common to just about all Ms.

Hole in hood, Dist. carb I'll sum that up as most likely a dist. model. When the need arises to remove the valve cover I'll check the casting on the head. I was also suspecting its an early 47 model. That atleast helps narrow the serial # down to a certain range. Thanks

The spark plugs are numbered from radiator back.
The head casting # (which can indicate a dist. head) is under the valve cover.
Good luck!

Thanks, no need to remove the valve cover just yet though. I'll have to check (after what you told me) but the plugs might be wired bassackward, but it runs and sounds o.k.

If the plugs are wired so that #4 seems to be first, you may have had the engine 180from the real #1 when you looked at it. It will not run with the timing and wiring 180 out so it is more than likely ok. The following might help when looking at the wires.
Make sure you are on compression with #1 by turning ignition off, and pulling #1 sparkplug. Then, with a short piece of garden hose stuck in the spark plug hole (not all the way into the chamber), rotate the engine with the crank till air blows out of the hose. Then align the marks, and look at the rotor. Otherwise it could be 180 degrees off.

Its fine, just for the heck of it yesterday I reversed the plugs. It wouldn't hit a lick, then I changed it back the way it was before It flooded. Started on the first bump of the starter.
