Extra hole in hood of M

I read in an earlier post that an extra hole in the hood of an "M" was most likely for a smaller gas tank used for starting a disilitte motor on gas. I looked and sure enough I have that hole. There appears to be a place for mounting a smaller tank but no connections going to the carb. My "M" is a 1947 model, is it most likely originally a disillite model that has been converted to all gas and if so how can I tell? Should I be running a different type of fuel? I currently have 93 octane gas in the tank and it seems to be running fine but if you just read my previous post you will note that I just got the tractor running Sunday and I haven't ran it for any extendend period of time yet as I am waiting until I can finish tuning it up. I'm gonna call the previous owner and see if he can give me some insight to this question. The serial # plate on the tractor is missing so that wont help.

Thanks for the info. Yes some day I would like to try pulling it, just to see what it will do. I don't know maybe the heads have been changed in an earlier rebuild. I do have the brass drain plug in the carb. and my manifold looks slightly different from the new ones that are available. When I get home I'll check some ser. #s on the carb, and engine block and post them tomorrow.

Look at your serial number, if the number is followed by X1, then your M left the factory equipped to use gasoline. If there is no suffix, or at least if the suffix is NOT X1, then the M left the factory equipped to burn distillate. Distillate fuel has not been available for probably 35 to 40 years, so most of the old tractors were converted to burn gasoline already. A few were never converted, the owner simply put gas in the tank instead of distillate, and the tractor pretty much never knew the difference. The only difference in the carburetors is that the distillate carb had a brass drain cock in the bowl, and the gas carb has a pipe plug. The main metering jet may also be different, but can easily be replaced with a metering jet from the other style. The cylinder head is also different, the distillate head being lower compression, but unless you are into tractor pulling, you will never know the difference there either.

That H I got the other day has that petcock. I don't recall the serial having the X1 on it. Is the serial # system the same on the Hs? I already know that I have the distillate or all-fuel hood, but never gave it a thought that I might have a distillate tractor until you mentioned that petcock.

PS - Thanks much Rusty, you've been a wealth of information. I appreciate it a lot.

Cool Beans! I have a distillate model! The small tank is gone, and no sign of it. Was probably removed and tossed when the heads were switched I bet. Probably went something like this ---- it probably needed to be removed to replace the head - mechanic asked farmer if he wanted it - farmer said nope - mechanic tossed it.

Hey Jay(ND) looks like we both learned something new about our tractors today, and found out that we have something in common, we both have dissilute model M's. Cool Man!

Sorta! My M is a gasser, but my "new" H is a distillate! In the last several days I've learned a lot about this H I have and a lot about my Grandpa's 1949 DC-3 Case. Hat's off to all those here.

Could be that your hood was replaced at some point with a used one from a distillate tractor. The distillate fuel bowl had two fuel line connections as opposed to one and the manifold would have a heat shield or at least the connecting studs on the front and an adjustment lever on the side to regulate temperature on the dual fuel models.
They haven't made distillate in decades. Regular unleaded is fine.

I don't believe it's necessary to run 93 octane in your tractor. They're not exactly high compression engines. They're perfectly happy running on regular, and it'll sure save you a few bucks.

I bought the gas a couple days after Hurricane Katrina hit, you know the day gas went from $2.58 a gallon to $3.49 in one day. It was the only grade of gas left, I normally burn 87 octane in all my vehicles, newer or older.

Running on gas is fine... the distillate has a different carb, and different manifold. Post a picture, someone will tell the difference. Also post the part number for the head, someone here will also tell you what head you have.
