Farmall 706 Hmmm...should I get it?

Hey gang,
I looked at a 706D Farmall today that is going on the auction on Friday. I could buy it beforehand for $2200. I don"t know....do I need another tractor? They say that it needs a head gasket because there"s compression and oil in the radiator. Of course the head could be cracked too. The hour meter shows 9700 hrs.
The good points are that the sheet metal is complete and straight, good flat top fenders, two speed PTO, open station, wide front, dual hydraulics, fast hitch, and supposedly it"s had recent work done on the TA and bottom end of the engine. It runs. Like the guy selling it said, you could almost part it out and come out ok for $2200. I"m afraid that if it goes to auction, the salvage guys will run up the price.
What do you think? Am I just trying to convince myself?
Paul

I think most of these auctioneers around here in MD charge a 10% buyer's fee and 5% MD sales tax. That would be an additional $585.00. Hal

Hi El Toro
The thing is, it"s the auctioneer that I"d be buying it from- he"s the local jockey. Your point is good though, buying it now could save some. I think I"ll call him.....
Here in WI we don"t have buyers fees. I"ve never been to an auction that had that, I"ve only heard about them. Also we don"t pay sales tax on farm items. So what"s up with MD. that they charge you tax?
And you"re right about the IQ thing.

There isn't much that MD doesn't tax you on, they should be the richest state in the union. You can
cross over the state line into Delaware and they do not have a sales tax. MD has road runners out checking people returning from Delaware to see what they have purchased. Getting to sound desperate. Any big items I buy in DE and I have it delivered. Hal

Hal, maybe MD can get a good deal on some used parts from the Berlin wall. It sounds like communism when they start checking to see where you bought a box of nails. Even the local farm supply store will not charge tax if you sign a form saying it"s for farm use here, except for oil.

They followed my nephew as he was reentering MD
and stopped him near where lives. He had a reclining chair in the truck and they wanted to know if he had bought it in DE and he said he had it repaired in DE. He told them the chair was several years old, but under warranty. He showed them the repair order and I guess they left with red faces. Hal

I"m surprised the "gestapo" didn"t try to nail him for back taxes from when he presumably bought the chair in DE!

In my opinion, it"s none of their !@#$%^ business where it was purchased. Oh well, I guess anyplace will have it"s drawbacks. WI has among the highest tax rates on gas and diesel.

I think if you live in MD and work in DE you have to pay them income tax. I don't think you need to pay in DE, but I could be wrong, I'll ask my sister since she worked in DE for a long time. Hal
PS: I think QVC & HSN will charge tax if you live in MD and then they send that to the MD tax comptroller. Can't win for losing.

Backus:
I have owned 2 706d for a long time very good tractori would comare it to the M as far as popularity and ruggedness as far as the farmalls go they did put 2 different engines in these tractors a 310 and a 282 the easy way to determine the difference is most 310 had spin on filters for fuel and oil the 282 had glow plugs. as long as batteries are up and all glow plugs work it starts in the cold no problem as far as the cracked head i have heard this is a common problem although i have never had this problem the 282 is the same motor as far as the head is concerned as the 656 560 and several others the other main problem is the shift linkage it is fixable more time than money some bushings and a kit. I would buy the tractor I payed 2000.00 for one of mine and had the engine redone 3200.00 this was 10 yr ago. the other one i paid 4200 for ran for two yaers and had the engine redone. hope this helped

Thanks, yes it gives me some confidence that maybe I won"t be taking a bath on this.
The shift linkage seems to be snug, not sloppy, but I haven"t driven it either.

Must be.
Seems that anyone that I hire is good at breaking stuff, but has no idea how to fix it, and no ambition to learn how, or even to think about it.

Hey Yugrotcart from Japan,
Maybe I should use the T-20 for raking hay. Whaddya think?
In your fuel delivery business, have you noticed any reduction in the use of gas, or just an increase in complaining?

"needs a head gasket?" I ran into one about six or seven years ago that needed a "head gasket" it really needed a head, and every head we found was cracked in the SAME place. It sounds like a deal but you could have lotsa fun finding a head

ummmmm, you ever rebuild an M or an H? 2,200 is CHEAP for the power you are getting out of that 706...

Hi arod,
The only thing is, this 706 might need more work than just that head gasket too, but you are right. The 706 is more tractor than my H or an M. I thought it would make a good rake tractor (big merger rake) since the guys that help me out in summer can"t seem to figure out the SW6TA and I sure wouldn"t put them on the 600D. I thought the 706 would be more "idiot proof", with power steering and all.

Just out of idle curiosity, what is it about the SW6TA they can't figure out? I've got a LOT of seat time on a SW6, I can't see how it could be simpler.

Well, the one guy trashed the brakes by leaving the brake lock on. Another time the hydraulic resevoir was drained by leaving some adapters on the couplers (they will continue to run until it"s dry). Having a TA lever and some slop in the clutch pedal, the two will collide and cause some "issues" when trying to disengage the clutch, especially in a "panic" situation. Of course no one can figure out how to take a distributor cap off and dry it out, or remove the gas line and clear it when it"s blocked when it"s running crappy. No power steering doesn"t help his backing or maneuvering abilities either. And this guy literally has an IQ of 135 or so.
None of these things bother me, but the tractor does have it"s idiosynchrasies.

What he'll do with the 706 is shove it into 'Park' while it's still rolling. A smart man can wreck anything if he sets his mind to it. Wm

So true.
One of my pet peeves is when guys shut the engine down hot or run it hard when it"s cold. One time the engine was shut down at almost full throttle (a non IH tractor) so that when I started it, the engine roared to 1800 rpm. Then folks wonder how the head gets cracked. Oh well, maybe I"m just too fussy.
