Hi I'm working on my neighbors 806 diesel and its got a knock or rattle in the engine. I pulled the oil pan off and there were small pieces of metal in the pan that looked like parts of teeth from a gear. I can see the crank and idler gears and they look ok. I am wondering if there is something common that fails in these engines. Thank You

I would be on the safe side and overhaul it. If your havin problems now and all you do is correct that specific problem, another one could be lurking around the next corner.

I think you need to investigate further to see where those teeth came from. If you saved the oil from the crankcase a lab could determine how much metal shavings are in that oil. That engine probably needs to be torn down and completely degreased and cleaned of any metal. It probably has circulated throughout the engine.

These engines are pretty much rock solid and bulletproof, so you just have a random failure there.

Metal in the oil pan is BAD.

Hi thanks for the info guys I think I'll have to start into it further. I did send in a oil sample and the main thing they found was copper they say is from the mains.

That doesn't sound too good, hope the crankshaft is ok. Hal
