Farmall H Hydraulic question

I just bought a 1948 Farmall H and hooked it up to my disc but the hydraulic cylinder on the disc does not lift or lower. It worked on another tractor when I bought it a couple of months ago but not on this tractor. Is it possible the hydraulic fluid is low in the tractor or just the hydraulic cylinder is stuck. If it is the fluid what type should I fill it with?? I get just a little movement and pulsation in the hydraulic line but nothing happens with the cylinder.
Thanks
Jeff

One way or two way cylinder? Unless your H has been modified to use 2-way live hydraulics, or has the "Christmas tree" attached to the belly pump, your hydraulics are one way. If you have a 2-way cylinder, you have to vent the down port on the cylinder. Use only one line from any of the 3 ports to the cylinder. They are all pressure ports, if you have two of them hooked up you are feeding pressure into both ends of the cylinder. If you have it hooked up correctly, forget what I said.

I'd go with slappy's recommendation - 6 quarts - the operator's manual for the H and the service manual for the lift-all says to use the same viscosity oil as the oil you use in your engine. The operator's manual says above +80F, 30W; +80F - +32F, 20W; below +32F, 10W. Having said all that, if the implements are to be used with other tractors, I'd use hydraulic oil. If your dipstick is missing, as mine was and as is to be found with many Hs, you can make one up from a rod or a heavy wire. I'd use the level after draining and filling with 5 quarts as your 'minimum' mark and 6 quarts as your 'full' mark.

The original recommendation was 20wt non-detergent motor oil. If the implement/s are used with other tractors with modern hydraulics using hydraulic oil, I would use that instead, for compatibility. Good quality oil appears to be one as good as the other. cheap oil from Store-in-a-Box farm stores is frowned on. The filler is under the front of the fuel tank on the right side. It looks like a fist full knob. There should be a dip stick under it. If not use a wire and fill it within 8" (my guess) of the top of the pipe. All the 1.2" fittings do the same thing except if the left rear fitting has a restrictor in it to chang the dropping and lifting rate of the rear of certain implements (probably does not have restrictor).

Pull out on loop of 5/16 rod on right to lift. it should stay out till the cylinder bottoms/tops out then snap back to the metal stop welded to the bottom of the rod. Pushing up and forward past the stop lowers things.

I hope it helps, JimN

Thanks for all the answers. Sounds like it may just be low on oil. I will check it out and change the oil just to be sure. Thanks again
Jeff

I would empty the oil from the pump and refill with 30wt oil - it takes 6 quarts. Who knows how long its been since its lats change.
