Well Blue Guy: Positively the most bullet proof tractor ever built. As Jake said 806 was the best tractor ever built and the 856 was just an improved version. There are 806 and 856 out there with over 20,000 hours and never had an engine rebuild.

My Grandfather bought an 856 D custoum New in 1968 I belive. He Still has this tractor and it is one of the nicest tractors he has. We estimate the tractor to have around 10000 hours on it. A couple years a go he had someone put new berings in the motor and he has put a new clutch and torque in it other wise it has not been touched. The tractor still dose most of the baling, is put on the discbine, and any other odd job it is needed for.

Mornin",

They were built between 1967 and 1971 and came with the American 407D in the rowcrop style or a smaller 4 pop 268D German in the "XL" version.

The 856D Farmall can be thought of as kinda like the precurser or an "old style" 966 because it came with 18.4 x 38 sized tires in the large frame chassis and was rated at about 100 horse at the PTO.

Don"t see many of "em around.

Allan,

I take this to mean that there is also a German 856 (856XL?) that is a completely different rig from the classic Farmall 856?

I also wouldn't exactly consider an 856 rare. There are still lots of them around and in regular daily use.

Nat,

Heck, I don't know how all that worked, but the 856XL was built in Germany and had a 4 pop 268 Diesel rated at 85 horse.

I think that they were 4 wheel drive outfits too.

Thanks for all the replies. The one I might be interested in is a row-crop. I have only seen the picture of it so far. It has international on the side. I didn' see any farmall markings on it, but I haven't got a good look at it yet. It sells on the 22nd.

Blue Guy: On all 856 the main side decal was INTERNATIONAL The word FARMALL will be on the 856 model decal beside the radiator. That change occured at the beginning of 1968 and new 56 series models.

Until 1967 and 06 series the main decal on side of engine hood was either FARMALL or INTERNATIONAL. With the introduction of 56 series that all changed to what I've listed in first paragraph. There are two exceptions, 656 introduced in 1965 and the 140. 656 used 06 type grill and decals and changed at end of 1967 with other models and 140 just went with the times from 1958 all the way to 1979. What ever grill and decals was current on larger tractors, 140 had the same, but still remained a 140.

This applies to completely built US tractors. British and German built may have followed suit, but I'm not saying that.

They have an engine that'll last almost forever, but they are fairly expensive to rebuild. Any T/A that works, including one just put in is in the process of going out, but if shifted correctly they last 5000+ hrs, and if abused can fail in no time at all. The trans and final drive rarely have any problems, and most are caused by putting on the parking brake while moving or having it out of adjustment, which takes out low in the range transmission. To replace it you have to pull the final drives and the differential. Many people consider an 806 to be the best IH ever made, and an 856 is an improved version of the 806. You'll be happy with it if it's in decent shape, as they are a great tractor. Jake

Thanks JakeF,
Do you know the production numbers? I've seen on the tractordata site that the IH and Farmall brands were made the same years on this model. If thats correct the IH 856 was a rare machine.

Yep, the International (standard tread/wheatland) version was rare compared to the Farmall. By the late '60s, wheatland tractors were on their way out, due to improvements in cab design, changes in farming techniques, the refinement of the large articulated 4WD tractor, and the fact that a row crop can do everything a wheatland tractor can, and more.

You're getting confused by the whole Farmall vs. International thing. "Farmall" is the name International Harvester put on their row-crop models. "International" is the name IH put on their standard tread, utility, and wheatland models. Many models were made in both versions, with the main differences being the front axle, rear wheels/tires, and hitch. This gets very cunfusing, since the row-crop tractors built 56 series and after also say "International" on the side of the hood. Yes, the standard tread wheatland 856 is very unusual. Don't know what the exact numbers are, but I'd guess 30,000+ row crops and less than 5000 wheatlands. If the 856 you are looking at has been well cared for, go for it.
