OK....this is probably like tractor repair 101 foe most of you guys, but I was out looking at the Farmall B today since the new bearing for the front wheel is here and it occurs to me that this tractor has one heck of a lot of clearance. Must be around two feet to the ground. Floor jack is not gonna do this. Bottle jack, nope. I do have one of those ancient screw jacks that would probably be tall enough but I am not sure I have the cohones to 1.) turn that thing up and 2.) work next to it while it is up. What is the best way to jack up a tractor of this type safely?

Dave: Oh for those old narrow fronts, safest thing in the world to change a front tire on, change a bearing. Just the old block of 2x4 or 2x6 and the necessary wrenches.

A lot of folks say the worst part about a narrow front is stability, no just not so. The worst part is casually driving along not a tight grip on the steering wheel, and one front wheel strikes a rock. Man can the spokes of that steering wheel rap you on the knuckles. It has demolished wrist watches, broken wrists and caused men to utter four letter words they don't normally use.

Thanks all! Just another case of me overthinking the issue and missing the obvious! Never had that experience with the steering wheel, knock on wood. Hope it stays that way! I'll put it in gear too, just to be safe.

Dave

like the others have said, drive the other tire up on a 2x. another option that i tend to do when i can't do the first is to stack blocks to get high enough to use a bottle jack. i have several 12x, 10x and 8x blocking that i use. i block the tires on the "other" end and just stack to the desired hight and jack away.

Yup, narrow front's are the easiest to work on as far as the front tires. A 2 X 4 or 2 X 6 is plenty to get the tire off the ground as long as it is pumped up good. Dave.

Simply drive the good tire up on a sturdy block of wood, lock the brakes, and repair the other front tire.

I wouldn't trust the brakes alone, the tractor needs to be left in 1st gear.
