1066 PTO Question

The one on my cousin's tractor quit working. Sez there were no symptoms - it just quit. Now, I haven't looked at it, and he's no mechanic, but he says the pump is getting oil, not much (how he knows this - I don't know). I do know he's had the unit in and out several times and looked at the discs.

He's taking the unit to the dealer today to let them look in to it.

How many things could go wrong that would make one just quit working?

Just curious,
Mitch

the oil pickup tube out of the back of the pto unit has a screen in it that is prone to get stopped up. if it cannot get any oil the unit will not engage.

The PTO has it's own pump. If the main pump dies you'll still have pto.

But if it all dies you get an idea of what to look for.

Mitch If it just quite working I would bet it is the 1/32 pin that holds the control valve together. This is one problem that happened now and then on all the IH with the hydraulic operated PTO. Could be fixed with out taking PTO off tractor, would need guage to set pressure after fix.

He sez everything "feels" normal when he engages the lever.

I'm not familiar enough with the unit to know the pin you mention, but I'll pass the info on. Thanks!

Mitch

What happens on Dad's 856 from time to time is the pressure adjustment slowly unscrews itself and eventually the pressure just gets set low enough that it won't engage the clutches anymore.

This is the setting they're talking about you needing a gauge for.
