I have a 1953 Super C with a front end loader on it. Recently, when I lift the bucket, stop to do something else, and lift again, the bucket will drop 6 to 8 inched before lifting. This has become a real issue as I am sure you can imagine. Also, I was going to use the bucket to lift a propane tank a couple of days ago, and it wouldn't pick it up. The tank was empty and should not have weighed more than 500 pounds or so. I expected it to have no problem. My fluid looks to have plenty in the tank, but it looked milky and thick... not sure if that is how it should look or not. Thanks for any help you guys can give.

I would drain the oil and replace with a quality hydraulic oil designed for farm applications. Souds like yours has moisture and is foaming with air. as it sets the air works out and creates pockets that let the loader drop.

A milky appearance indicates the oil has moisture in it, not a good thing. Do as Cowman says, change it.

Is there a good method for this? I have never had to do it before? Also, one detail I forgot to mention before, several months ago, while using the bucket, I noticed hydralic fluid coming out from around he cap on the resivoir. Could this point to a seperate issue maybe, or was the cap just loose? Thanks for the help already.

Probably not a separate issue. If the oil is foaming up it will come out wherever there is an opening.

Got a recommendation on how to drain it, and what brand/type to replace it with?

Hi, I'm the site curmudgeon. Get yourself an Operator's Manual. It will cover how and where to change the hydraulic oil.

I like mine on paper. That way, I can take it with me.

The fill plug, drain plug, and screen are all on the left side of the reservoir. You will have to remove the steering shaft to get the screen out to clean it. It won't hurt to get some of the crud off the bottom of the reservoir and flush out the old fluid - hoses, cylinders, etc.

Depending on what equipment you have, it will take between ~7 and ~10 pints to refill. Fill the reservoir to 1/2" of the filler opening. Operate the lift 10-12 times (leave the levers in the back position) and recheck the level. Manual says to use IH Touch Control Fluid. I have been using regular hydraulic oil.
