they did the same thing at the IH canton,ILL
plant in 1961 when they closed the foundry portion of that plant,I have seen some of the
placks and belt buckels they poured from the last pour in canton
at estate sales and flea markets around canton,
canton plant closed in 1983 the economic effects on the community are still felt today

The first tractor was built in the Farmall Works on October 1, 1926 and the last tractor (a 5488) rolled off the line on May 14, 1985. Did they maybe quit using the foundry portion of the plant in 1967?

I started working at FARMALL fall of '76 and the foundry was LONG gone then. They still had some buildings that were part of the foundry like "The Sand Shed" and the four-story building on the east end of the plant was called "The Motor building" where the machining & assembly work was done but by '76 ALL that was purchased from other IHC plants. IH had foundries in Louisville, Memphis, Waukesha, WI., Indy, and it seems like there was one other foundry. Engines came from Melrose Park, IL. complete & ready-to-run. The 2 or 3 gasoline engines used in 686's in '76 when I started there came from Indy I believe. The CANTON plant mentioned in another post did HEAVY metal fabrication like the 3-point hitch arms, siderails, the front weldments for 2+2's. When work got slow at Canton towards '80 & '81 IH East Moline transfered a LOT of lighter gauge steel parts to Canton, like battery boxes, cab steps, etc. All the hood sheetmetal for the '86 & '88 series kept coming from The East Moline Plant. Hood sheetmetal for the 2+2's came from the Shadyside, Ohio truck stamping plant. Took a LOT of $$$$$ to keep a foundry running with all the environmental changes that were going on in the late 60's. I think there was about four semitruck loads of castings shipped DAILY from LVL to Farmall, and at least one more load of forgings and machined parts from the other part of the LVL plant.

In general, Louisville was built for the small tractors, they did build some Super M's, no H's, M's or Super MTA's, later the smaller utilities, etc, I don't know what else.
