Can you tell me about the Starting Crank Pin for a Farmall M? It broke and I would like to fix this for the purpose of restoration and timing.

What size is the pin? How does it stay mounted? Where can I buy one other than the dealer?

On my 46' Farmall M, the crankshaft has a set screw in it holding the starting crank pin in place (just recently pushed it out with a gear puller; it was not tapered, measures 1/2x2 1/2", and had an indention all around the middle for the set screw to seat in). The parts catelog calls for a 5/16x1/2" setscrew with a cone point.

When I made my crank for my Farmall Cub, I just used a roll pin. Got one about the right diameter and length and drove it in. Don't believe it will fall out. Kind of get a thrill hand cranking the old tractor. Starts pretty easily.

I have replaced them in all four of my tractors (2h"s-2m"s), and mine were all 5/16x1 1/2" long. I just drove them through and they"ve held for years. I hand crank "em every once in awhile to show my friends how it was done way back when. I just went to napa or the farm store and got some 5/16 round stock and cut "em to length, and drove them in.

Has been a long time since I have hand cranked. Remember when I was a young lad and did this. Sometimes when the old girl would not crank right away I would amost be too tired to work after she cranked.

In the stage of trying to finish this job of restoration so I can play with her. Thanks for your help.

Should be able to get good used one from a salvageyard. Here's a web site for salvageyards.

I used a bolt of the right size (a length of it that did not have threads) then peened the section that went stayed in the hole so it would stay in place. I can't remember right off hand, but I think it is 1/4 inch.

Use a Grade 8 bolt

I use gorilla glue (read the directions) or Epoxy after roughing the pin surface where it will touch the shaft. JimN
