Farmall C radiator problem

I have a 1950 Farmall C with a water pump and thermostat. When you let it idle for a few minutes, anti-freeze starts running out of the overflow tube until the water is below the top of the core. There is no oil in the water/water in the oil. It does however blow some liquid out of the muffler when you first start it, but it doesn"t smell sweet, and is sooty black. I rebuilt it one year ago with fire-crater pistons(145 psi/cylinder)and have retorqued the head gasket 4 times since. What am I missing? The cap holds presure, could it be holding too much? The thermostat is 6 months old, could it be bad and causing the block to cavitate?

Well guys, thanks. It doesn't overheat, the temp guage stays in the normal range, and there are no air bubbles in it. Maybe I'll just flush the core out good and try it again. It only does it if I start the engine and let it idle, if I start it and go right to work, it doesn't do it.

These tractors came with or with out a water pump, the head gasket is different for those with water pump than those with out. If your tractor does not have a water pump it could be the head gasket.

The sooty black stuff you refer to (I assume settling on to the hood) is just condensate mixed with carbon ejected from the muffler when the engine is just started. This is when the engine is cold, and will clear up when it warms up. Nothing to worry about. If you want to keep your tractor looking good, you need to wipe it off pretty quickly, or it will stain the paint. I don't have a thermostat in my SC, they were the first things to be discarded here in Black Belt. But seeing that it is my "Sunday Ride," and I never get it under a load, I am thinking about putting one in, since it never registers temperature above "cold" on the thermometer, and I believe that cold-running only helps to build up carbon in the cylinders and on the spark plugs. Like CNKS, I think you either have a faulty thermostat or have it in upside down. Try taking it out completely for awhile and see how she runs.

The cap doesn't hold too much pressure, otherwise it wouldn't go out of the overflow. Your cap may be too weak. But, it sounds like you have a blockage somewhere, as these engines warm up slowly and should be able to idle a long time before they get hot, pressure system or not. My C and Super A do not have water pumps or thermostats, could you have the thermostat in upside down?

Are you refilling it everytime it cools off?does the temp gauge stay in the normal range?I"m no expert, and I could be wrong about yours but my A"s and C will always burp off the top 2 or so inches coolant when it gets a little warmed up.Had the original operator tell me this was normal,to let it burp and don"t add anymore. If its doing it immediately, its a hole of somekind.then I would be looking for "air" bubbles after just starting it,to prove a blown gasket or some other equally sickening repair needed.Hope its just water expansion, not something else.Remember I"m still no expert and these other gents surely know more than me.If I"m wrong someone should correct me.
